I use a 10" android tablet and am sick to death of sites reverting to mobile mode for chrome browser.  Is there any way to permanently force chrome on android to always act as desktop? If not chrome, what browser can you do this with?

You can do it in chome but requires root or something else that seemed to complicated to care.

The other option is Firefox and get the addon that ticks all box's to request the desktop site.

Grab opera browser, settings: desktop mode. You only have to do this once and I find the clear clutter free interface superb for maximising realstate.
