Anyone have any insider knowledge of how one might acquire a Pixel 3a in New Zealand?

I don't "need" to purchase another phone as my LG G6 is adequate for the job ... however the idea of once again having a pure Android phone that actually gets updates and is affordable (based on $US) is tempting

The price in the Google Store in Aus isn't so appealing - AUD 649 / 799.

They're also selling it in Aus through Vodafone, Harvey Norman, JB Hifi, and OfficeWorks.

While it ticks most of the right boxes for me as a replacement for my Nexus 5x - which is still running fine, I only paid $400 for that, and that had support from Warehouse Stationery - as some who had faulty Nexus phones needed to rely on.

The expected price - with no local support except promise by some grey-market importer doesn't appeal to me much.

I don't think its going to be sold here. Google has shown very little interest in NZ.

The easiest way is going to be from Australia, saves buying a new charger etc. From experience google will still offer warranty for products bought abroad.

Time to plan a trip to Australia / make a new Australian friend who can forward you one.

$595 million doesn't interest them?

Not when Alphabet Inc posts a $30 billion profit!

Don't some other brands now do an almost pure android experience and get very regular updates? Nokias seem to get regular updates from what I can see and it looks like pure android. These new pixels look pricey and they aren't using the fastest chips either.

Yes Google along with Motorola treat New Zealand as a tech 3rd world that doesn't matter. You have to buy them via parallel importers.

Given the Australian spec products (phones, laptop, home etc) sold on google play store ship from Asia (Singapore I think), it would be very easy, with very little extra overhead for them to ship identical products to NZ.

But they have shown no interest so far. I'm not expecting anything different with the Pixel 3a.

If they already fail to bother with the proper Pixel why would they start selling us the cheap version?

Hoping that PB Tech put up pre orders soon then, as they have stocked Pixel's in the past

Otherwise I am leaning towards getting one in Singapore when I pass through at the end of the month, even though I lose any warranty support with that method.

Purchased a 3a (standard, not XL version) via Google Singapore, shipped to the hotel I am staying at
Money has already been taken, so fingers crossed it all goes smoothly.

I see Dick Smith have them for sale, if purchasing from their website does customs duty + GST get charged?

B&H (USA) are also offering $100 store credit with each Pixel 3a purchased which does offset the duty/GST somewhat.

Yes you get hit with customs honestly the best way to get it would be from JB HI FI in Aussie and have it shipped here, they supposedly provide warranty on it through the jbhifi here, not tested though, or wait for pbtech but they don't seem interested in pixel since the whole Nexus 5x and 6p mess.

the 6a has been tooted as possibly a perfect device for cellmapping.

It's cpu isnt the greatest, but damn it's got wide band support.

however, it's only 2x2 (so supports 4x2) 3CA or 2CA with 4x4. Kinda weak if you want a fast device.

Almost as weak as the mate 20 pro's actual implementation though...

Have a family member going to Aus next week so JB Hifi it is! If they bring it with them you only have to declare goods if over $700 right?

If you give it a week or two places like expert infotech will have them in stock.

Also the Snapdragon 670 has around the same performance as the Snapdragon 835 which is no slouch. I wouldn't worry about performance.
