How are people storing their covid vaccine certificate in their phone?
Google Pay doesn't seem to have the option (on my phone at least) to add this.

I'm still waiting to log into the MOH website to download
my certificate, but is it just a PDF file with a QR code on it?

Did you try the link in the email? Seems to work OK - but some banks have virtual credit cards running through Google Pay now, so I imagine it's easier if you're already set up for that.

Never used Google Pay until I downloaded it this morning specifically to store the Vaccine Passport. Just installed it and when i got the email  with the pdf just followed the link to Google Pay in that email and it is there in Google Pay

Vaccine pass is emailed to you with a PDF and links for both Google Pay and Apple Wallet.

Then you can add a icon to your home screen for quick access to that "card".

The OP hasn’t yet activated the request for the email yet (still waiting to log in at the time they were writing), so won’t have the email to click on.

Once that email arrives you should be fine, unless you run into the issue some (including me) have had, but there’s explanations on how to get around that on the main thread (https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=161&topicid=290002).

Great thanks for confirming.
I have Google Pay setup with my credit cards and some loyalty ones, just wanted to know where the vaccine cert fitted in with all that.

I'll keep trying later to get my certificate and refer to the main post for anything.

Cheers!

You'll see it with the loyalty cards. It's gone to the top of the list of cards, and not in alphabetical order like the cards.

ETA: you'll also be able to add a link directly to the pass on your home screen

I don't use Google Pay and never set it up, yet when I clicked on the link on my phone it loaded the passport into the app without any issues, and prompted me to add an icon on the home screen.  As a backup I have it saved in different places as a PDF.  I appreciate that the website has had it's teething issues but I found the process incredibly simple and well organised.

Screenshot the QR code and store it on the phone. Put a shortcut to the image on the phone home screen.

My boss has some philosophical objection to Google Pay (her prerogative - I use it all the time since finally figuring out how to get rid of the "too many cards" error message) so she just has the emailed PDF saved on her phone and a shortcut to it on her home screen. I just clicked the link in the email. The pass was added to Google Pay and asked me if I wanted the home screen shortcut as well. Seemed to all work pretty quickly and easily.

You have to use Google Chrome on your phone to add your certificate to Google Pay. Firefox doesn't seem to work. I had removed Chrome a while back because it was talking a lot of CPU time in the background for no reason, I had to install it for 5 mins to add the vaccine pass to Google Play.

Must try Chrome again now I'm on Android 12, see if it's fixed.

I tried to help my dad set this up over the weekend and while everything appeared to work as normal (it asked him to confirm he wanted to add it, asked for his PIN, etc.) the actual QR code just came up as a blank square. There were also some 'placeholders' that looked like they should contain name/DOB (assuming it works like the iOS one) but they were also blank. Has anyone run into that?

That sounds like the verifier app.
