Hey all,

I'm looking at upgrading my iPhone 14 to either a Samsung 25 FE or a Moto Edge 60 Pro (work moved me to iPhone which they supplied over 3 years ago but I can now go with what I want - these two are in my price range and available for interest free with One NZ).

I don't game, I watch streaming sports, Facebook, web, email and text. Nothing too strenuous. I'd like a bigger screen, and still want wireless charging.
I'll miss the facial recognition of the iPhone (maybe), but no way am I spending $1600+ on a new iPhone, even interest free.

Thoughts please?

I would trade in the iPhone 14 and get an iPhone 17

I'd wait a little, 2026 Motorola line up is around the corner, why not wait and see what they have to offer before deciding?

The Samsung is supposed to get 7 years of OS and security updates.

The Motorola apparently 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security.

I googled that.

Apart from that, they are both probably solid choices.

The Samsung has a bit more Samsung tweaks. I gather the Motorolas are a more standard android.

Honestly you can't go wrong with any Android phone these days, unless there's specific features/designs you want/don't want. Like for me, I don't like how some phones have those gigantic circular camera modules at the back (too ugly and over-the-top for my liking). But it's still a superficial distinction, and that's what it boils down to these days between Androids (not counting the super cheap Chinese phones that come preloaded with lots of bloatware).

Even the cheapest device can handle all the tasks you mentioned with ease. Battery life is also similar, except for some of the newer phones which have a Silicon-Carbon battery, but again, that only matters if you expect to not have access to a charger/battery pack for more than a day. Otherwise most Androids have no issues lasting a day with average usage.

Between Samsung and Motorola, traditionally Samsung's skin was considered to be slow and heavy, but that is no longer the case these days. Also, a "stock" Android interface like what Motorola uses is still technically lighter, but practically these days it makes no difference. Same with the included "bloat", Motorola has lesser bloat than Samsung, but again practically it makes no difference these days. Plus you can easily disable any unwanted apps. Finally, Camera wise, Samsung is technically better, but if you're just an average smartphone photographer, it makes no difference.

So personally, I'd look at local support and the accessory ecosystem, and Samsung wins over Moto in both cases - like you could turn up at any random mobile shop and you can be sure they'll have tons of cases, screen protectors etc for a Samsung. With Moto, they may not have any for your model, and even if they do, the selection won't be as good as a Samsung.
