Yeh I'm of two minds about the whole thing.

The bit that's not sitting right with me is that I enjoyed it because it wasn't a Mercedes winning.  That has been so boring for the last few years, just as it was with the Ferrari Schumacher era etc beforehand.
That said though, the racing didn't necessarily make it an enjoyable race.

It will be a better season if there is a bit of competition at the top.

There have obviously been some major revamps of the rules, but I'm not sure they've targeted what really needed to be addressed.  They wanted 5seconds a lap faster times, and they haven't got that. However, even if they had achieved this, people weren't saying 'the cars aren't fast enough'.  People were saying there's not enough passing, you can't slipstream like you used to, the cars sound yuck compared to the spine tingling V12 days, the move to save the tyres and save fuel leads to racing at the start and end, but a boring progression in the middle, the drivers can't push without overheating in the turbulent air behind and burning up the touchy tyres.

The cars look ok, minus the long sharkfin in the middle and the coathanger additional wings on top, but making them wider doesn't help with the passing, as we saw on this circuit.  Hamilton complained (what a surprise) about there being no way to pass when stuck behind the redbull, and he had a good point.

McLaren need to dump that engine.  It was a good idea to try the Honda partnership and get exclusive rights to something new, but it's a heap of junk in cars that otherwise have looked pretty competitive in terms of aero and handling.

The mechanical grip appears to be only just offsetting increased aero, and thats likely, with the big front wings, and big rear wings, to make following harder than usual. If thats the case in reality, then pitstops will be the main passing point, but, the tyres are lasting so well, that one stop will become standard.

Nicely called there.  (unfortunately)

Following seemed to be so difficult that even the leaders were unable to follow the cars that they were lapping...  (many blue flag situations saw the "slower" car needing to get completely off the power, rather than just off the racing line, to let the leaders through)

Great performance from Ferrari though - hopefully it bodes well for a decent championship fight!

The Ferrari did ok being in behind the Mercedes, and there was passing, but this circuit isnt great for passing as well. I feel the Merc is setup to be in clear air, so it suffers in traffic, seen that often. Also Hamilton saying he was losing gip early on is weird, as the tyres last an age. Like you say the other factors don't help, managing this managing that, maybe Merc risked the engine in recent years to "get" more HP. I can easily see more abuse of the engine rules this year, if you can legally get free engines, well why not??

It was. I'm hoping that my theories are correct, in that there isnt that much between them, its more that Merc were more prepared to run the engine mapping higher for longer. All annecdotal, but in FP they also tend to run it lower for longer, preserving life.

Is that not the same as being forced to retire?

Contract looks to have a return clause in 2018, so not entirely the same.

Would he want to be racing this year in that heap of ...?

I think the guts of it was if Honda got their things together, then he'd come back, but it's just embarrassing for any past world champion to be playing around at the back of the field like this.

Yep. I rate Alonso as No.1 pure and simple. I rate Hamilton as being a very good driver amongst another small handful, but unless they are driving equal cars its a hard call. Whoever Merc drivers were, its a 50/50 call to win the title.

I think JB had had enough. Its fun, but not that much fun to be playing with the bottom end of the grid. Webber had enough of being scripted to No.2 , as did Massa and so on.

I think JB will race again, somewhere. Somewhere thats fun, and challenging. But not at McLaren.

I do wonder if they'll be forced at some point to have a universal front and rear wing. Then some sort of clever rule writing that removed barge boards or anything that protruded from the main body of the car.

Without quite going to a universal chassis. But cleaning up the winglets etc. I think that's part of what makes watching MotoGP so attractive, is that the rider who is sixth in a bunch leading onto a straight can be first by the end of it...

Could be a cracking race today. Pity about the weather though, as in the dry, they are close, particularly as its a long lap. Weather may bring a clear advantage to either of the top two teams, hope not. Team orders I think will be in use, but there isn't team orders for Hamilton vs Vettel, so cross fingers its a good one

The MotoGP, thats more Moto3. And even that gives an abnormal advantage, as is the following in F1. Ferrari seemed to follow ok, so perhaps there is still design issues that can help or hinder it. Merc has been great in front and poor following, so they seemed to focus on outright pace than and overall average.

I'm the reverse.  Bring on the weather and watch it even out the field a bit.
