No need to try another shipper. Amazon are now quoting me an acceptable shipping price, and have confirmed they can ship directly to NZ. The only reason I went to YouShop in the first place was because their quote was lower (which should've set off alarm bells). No idea why the Amazon shipping is now lower than the much higher price they originally quoted me. Perhaps because I'm signed up for the Amazon Prime trial (so I could get free 2 day shipping to YouShop).

Seems to me that it's horses for courses. If Amazon can't ship a product to NZ, then go for a reshipper. Let's face it, it's the only remaining option.

The crux of the matter is certainty, isn't it? At least you know that Amazon's price is all you're going to pay. If a great deal of uncertainty exists around the reshipper price then it's not very attractive despite the ostensibly lower cost.

It must be quite hard to get the reshipping business model right. The safeguards for them have to be in a longer delivery time and erring on the side of additional charges, repacking, etc.

For those reasons I think the reshipper cost would have to be significantly lower than the Amazon cost.

I will say I've learnt a lot during this process. It would be good if YouShop could get something out of it too, so they can continue to improve their product.

I guess my main beef with YouShop is that they seem unable to acknowledge how much of a lottery their quote estimator can be, especially if the purchaser doesn't have a way of getting the actual shipping measurements from the supplier they're ordering from. And that they seem totally unwilling to budge on what appears to me to be a very unreasonable increase in price. I know they are capable of applying discounts, as I've seen discount codes floating around. And yet they did not want to extend me that courtesy in this instance.

It is a complete lottery, about the only thing you can bet on is that the US retailer is quite likely to put whatever you buy into a huge box.

The other risk is that if the retailer ships the wrong product you're facing the cost of returning it to the US and shipping your replacement to NZ.

I have used Youshop a number of times though and overall I'm pretty happy with their service and it has saved me a reasonable amount on postage costs.

Everything is repacked in a larger box overseas. Nz is the only country where cheapass retailers slap a courier ticket onto the manufacturers box and trust it to the couriers.

I decided there was no point giving YouShop the 3 business days to re-measure my parcel just to tell me the measurements were correct (its highly unlikely they were wrong), especially considering Amazon gave me a prepaid RMA slip that expires in 7 days. I organised with YouShop to have it returned to Amazon instead.

I find it a little disconcerting that the YouShop website insists on telling me I still owe $117 for this, even though two CSRs have confirmed to me that it is free of charge. Yet another area that would be good to see tidied up on their website.

And Mauricio, this time I DID remember to use the Affiliate link for the re-order. :-)

Youshop are still showing that I have a parcel in transit months after they delivered it. Perhaps I should report it lost and instead of giving me the money ask them to offset it against your $117 :)

I find Youshop generally find, so long as you're not in a hurry. I just had some shoes from the US sent over : $280 in NZ, or $120 plus $40 from the US. Things often cost a bit more than expected, and it's always slow, but if you're patient it's fine. I like the lack of monthly fees, which some other places charge.

I used YouShop four times now, but always with small parcels. Never had this kind of problem, but really afraid of surprises.

Yeah. I know I'm not fully blameless here, but thought YouShop could've handled things better to come up with a nicer resolution for their customer.

It's not enough to put me off using them, but I'm far more mindful of the pitfalls involved now. And I do hope they can learn something from my story. I'm sure I'm not the first person that has been surprised in this manner, and who has walked away with a sour taste in their mouth.

A bit more than expected, I can handle. But $100 more than a $140 quote is where it becomes an issue for me. Never mind, I learned my lesson here.

Going to have to go for ship2u.co.nz - free repackaging for the win. You can also buy items without listing the drop shippings name as they track incoming packages that you submit based on the tracking number.
They also offer a consolidation service for $5 NZD and they can even inspect the items for you for a $5 charge.

There is a new 15% off code up on Kiwibanks website and it works. kiwibank15 will give you the 15% discount (valid until 15/12/13). I have had a number of parcels delivered by YouShop and initially was not impressed with the first couple that came in. The last two they have automatically repacked at substantial savings to me. $150.25 originally - repacked $102.50 and with the 15% discount will be $87.50 so I saved $62.75, parcel arrived at the warehouse yesterday and 2 hours later I got an email to say it had been received and repacked, so pretty dang fast for that one. The previous parcel took them three days but I saved around $45 on that one.

I have an Intel NUC on the way from Amazon.
Based on the extra large boxes I have received from Amazon on direct shipped items, I am hoping that the box my NUC is in is small to avoid high YouShop postage costs
