We've found a small crack at the bottom of our new (15 month old) shower. I have called insurance to claim this but I wonder what kind of remedy work can be done? Is this the case of removing the whole shower or are there companies that can repair just a section of the base? Also, anyway to find out if this has gone through all the way or just scratched the surface?

Not good...

Need an expert - consult your builder, shower installer, plumber, shower retailers.

Any brand label on the shower? Maybe it will give you an idea of who to contact.

Depends on floor type underneath too.... more of a worry if on a timber floor..... Leaks like that can travel a long distance...

If you have to use the shower, put some waterproof tape over the crack in the mean time....

That looks like acrylic, and the crack looks permanent.

Yes, just wondering the likelyhood of the crack being all the way through - and if repair would be replacing the whole shower base or some kind of magical thing plumbers might have available...

if its the try it is acrylic capped ABS.

All trays are reinforced with a steel frame and then filled with PU foam to reduce "creaks"

From previous experience I'd say it's a new shower... Seen under the floors of several where there is extensive water damage during the course of my work and I inform the owner and they click that it must be because of the small crack in the bottom of their shower base - every time I've asked afterwards, the showers have been replaced

I have some white duct tape... might prevent further water damage. But insurance sounds like a good idea, especially if there is damage underneath.

I wonder if those things need to be braced underneath, they often sound hollow.

Usually they will be hollow for the height of the base but flooring should be underneath that --- my fear with a rotten floor underneath is, if someone managed to slip thru the acrylic base, how painful would it be to try and get them back up? the plastic would slice right into you :s

There is no rotten floor underneath - it's concrete and the bathroom was completely stripped (walls, ceiling, floor) before everything went in.

Unless someone has been deliberately jumping on it, and no rotten floor underneath, sounds like you should perhaps also log a warranty claim with the shower manufacturer? Those things shouldn't last only a year and a bit in obviously.

From the spiel on the website...

BUILT TO LAST with impeccable strength...is not 15 months.

I’d wait to see if Insurance will cover it first. They might if someone had accidentally dropped something very heavy and it caused a crack, because then it’s an accident. Like if you were washing a dirty sledgehammer....?

Going back to the suppliers...their warranty on it could be limited to replacing the tray if found to be faulty, but not paying for any installation costs.

It’s quite a job to replace, they need to take out the back panels and doors to remove and replace the tray. Basically it’s re-installing a new shower.

There are products that could patch it. Ive asked a friend to let me know. He once gave us some super stuff to fix a hole, it was great, rock solid but it was a blue colour which you painted over so no good for your application.
