Read the last paragraph on this page http://www.xnet.co.nz/hsi/faq.shtml

"As of November 1 2008 there is a $99 disconnection fee if a customer cancels their service within the first 12 months. This fee reduces by $8.25 for each month your service is active with WorldxChange (ie: after 6 months the disconnection fee will be $49.50)."

What I want to know if this is for new customers only or does this apply for existing customers as well?

As I am about to move to a new isp due to crap offpeak speeds.

This should have been sent out to each customer with notice of when this was going to happen. Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think any one got an email from them saying that.

If this is only for new customers it is fair enough but for existing customers it is forcing them to stay with Xnet's crap speeds and a terrible way of keeping customers, except most ISP's do that anyway.

What source was this from? What are Xnet's reasons for this?

I'm making the conclusion from the Fusion pages:

Current Xnet customers can churn to Fusion without charge or contract. They will be issued with a new VFX service, including phone number as long as their Line Supplier is Telecom

... while a new customer:

Where a customer has no existing DSL or VFX connection, the customer can order a new Fusion circuit. As of November 1 2008 there is a $99 disconnection fee if a customer cancels their service within the first 12 months. This fee reduces by $8.25 for each month your service is active with WorldxChange (ie: after 6 months the disconnection fee will be $49.50)

I don't know why, but of course it might be to restrict the people who like to keep on jumping ISPs... as Xnet was pretty popular for it's no contract/terms plans.

very very dissapointing. the biggest advantage having xnet for me was the fact that there were no lock ins. Ioften head out overseas and dc my services for a month or two. looks like after my next hol its bye bye xnet.. so this will be my last month with xnet.

Same with me, first the speeds then this, Xnet is really digging itself a hole here.
Looks like i'll just have to fork up the early disconnection fee if it applies to existing customers.

if it applies to all customers they should have sent us a notice by mail .. maybe a months notice. its possble that xnet are losing alot of customers due to the torrent plan and speed effects.. and now have introduced this contract poicy in order to retain some.. will be pretty dumb though.. anyway im not happy at all.. i will ring them on monday to find out.. dont think im going to give in so easily and let them charge me a dc fee. my bill for october is already higher than my average use normally is (coz of the stupid torrent plan). I dont have to be nostradamus or a saint to predict that Xnet's popularity and choice for ISP is not going to last with these policies and issues..

Let us know how it goes. I have already sent them an email but since their reply rate is so shocking I'm not expecting an email any time soon.

A snippet from the dealer channel:

  • Existing customers are not affected, however if they disconnect and then reconnect with us the churn and/or contract will apply;
  • A person churning will ALSO have the $99 disconnection fees;
  • There is no set up fee – the disconnection fee covers this;

     &

    "These charges have previously been waived by Telecom Wholesale (TCNZW), but are now being charged to us"

Thanks for the info. Dealer channel? Do you sell Xnet broadband on behalf of WorldxChange?

one good point though is that the fee reduces eash month, I'd like other companies to follow suit if anf when they charge disconnection fees. I got burnt once when I had two months left out of 24 but had to disconnect and pay something scary.

Orcon@Home+ plans are with no contract.   Tempted to move myself after getting an invite in the post, and the current speed issues..

from their website: http://www.orcon.net.nz/faqs/orcon_llu_faq/

  • What contracts do I have to sign, and what minimum periods am I signed to?

    There are no contracts! The only minimum is a one month period - if you want to leave us, you can any time - you just need to give us a month's notice. With Orcon@home+ we've tried to answer what our customers have told us they want: super-simple pricing, and not being locked in to lengthy contracts.
