I am just wondering if there are any Aucklanders using VOIP services (2Talk etc.) who are connected via SNAP?

Basically I am looking at switching to SNAP so I can get a wholesale'd connection on my local cabinet.  I am on the very edge of the Mt Albert exchange via Orcon's LLU network and the lack of speed is killing me.

I use 2talk for VOIP, but I am worried about the extra lag to get to their CHCH exchange.

Thanks in advance.

I think is around 20-40ms higher latency if you live in Auckland vs Christchurch on Snap.

This is because they don't have any network operations or a point of precense in Auckland yet if I recall correctly.

Before recently swapping to Telecom BigTime, I was using Snap for both 2Talk and VFX lines at home, worked for months with no issues.

Nate: Just out of interest, because I am searching for ISP options... Why the shift to Telecom BigTime?

You probably won't notice +20-40ms in normal web and voip use. It's only really gamers who would be put off.

I'm in Auckland and ping around 45-50ms. Never really had any spikes, not to sure what its like now as I don't play games anymore.

Was getting issues with peaktime viewing of some sites (Youtube especially) and rather than complain about it, I swapped ISPs.

It's also cheaper with BigTime than Snap as I'm pulling 60Gb a month (BigTime is $59.95, Snap's 60Gb plan is $99).

I'm also looking at switching ISP currently. Over the last 2 months speeds to our server in the US have dropped from a lovely 1MB/s to about 30kB/s and stayed there 24 hours a day. No resolution from Snap unfortunately and I've pretty much had enough.

Sounds like SNAP isn't the one then.  Most of my work involves Vimeo videos and working with SVN servers from the US and lots of people are complaing about SNAPs US speeds.

Bugger.

Any other ideas on a *good* ISP offering Naked DSL through the wholesale cabinet DSLAMs?

Yeah, I too work with videos etc. from remote servers and it's been a painful couple of months using the Australian or New Zealand server as an intermediary.

A couple of months ago I would have recommended them without hesitation, unfortunately not anymore. Bugger indeed.

I guess that leaves Worldnet, Kiwilink and Maxnet who do nDSL only without a mandatory phone bundle. There may be more but I'm not aware off the top of my head.

I just queried the helpdesk whether there was any news before I looked at shifting ISP, their response was;

"No news from the front."

So it doesn't seem as if fixing it is a priority. From this I wouldn't recommend going with Snap at all.

It's looking like Maxnet is the goer which surprised me. Slightly more expensive but they seem to offer the right balance of connectivity/service. Switching over this week. Time will tell if they deliver.

Thanks all for your help and advice. It certainly helped shape the choice.
