Hey.

I've been a bigpipe customer for a while on 100mb unlimited fibre for $79. Very happy with experience so far.

Until recently I got special offer from slingshot fibre 100mb unlimited for $59. This offer is specific to my address and is 12 month contract.

I know it's 1 year contract. But hey it's 20 bucks a month less which is $240 savings a year + free router...

What I'm afraid of is to get locked into contract with poor speeds and unstable internet =/ Anyone using slingshot fibre could share thoughts / experience? Thank you guys!

If you are happy with Bigpipe then don't move! It's that simple

Very happy with BigPipe. Wouldn't move to even save money.

I was with Slingshot for a number of years across three properties. Each move was a pain: they waited for me to call them regarding existing connection, didn't action my fibre order (I'd put it in online before we moved) until I followed it up with them, sent the fibre router to the wrong address (where I'd lived two moves ago), and couldn't provision the fibre phone correctly (we'd previously had iTalk, and they couldn't separate the fibre phone plan from the iTalk plan.)

When we moved last time, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle of dealing with them anymore and cancelled the account. They were still billing me more than 12 months later for the iTalk plan (despite numerous calls/emails about it.)

It's not just me, either: my parents are with them and recently switched from DSL to fibre. Despite my mum telling them that she no longer wanted wiring insurance (yes, Slingshot do offer this with fibre...), she was still billed for it the next month. It also appears that she has been left on the wrong (non-fibre) toll plan, too, as she's recently been billed for a national call (which should be included with the fibre phone toll plan.) She's also been having problems with their rubbish router.

The actual (internet) service was alright. Some things better than Bigpipe; some (much) worse... such as their "transparent" cache butchering anything on port 80 that wasn't HTTP.

Personally, I'd stay well clear. Sure, it's a $205.06 ($20*12 - $19.99 router - $14.95 postage) saving... but only if nothing goes wrong, and you probably won't be saving anything once the first year ends.

I've had the Slingshot $59/month letter too for unlimited UFB. Am currently with Vodafone $79/month. Slingshot's offer seems cheaper than Bigpipe's $79/month but with a 12 months contract. What am I missing that makes it a no brainer? Would I be unhappy with Slingshot? Should I switch to Bigpipe instead when my Vodafone contract ends mid December?

Edit: I think Detruire's post above at the same time as mine answers my questions.

Hiya,

Obviously i'm going to beg to differ :) Definitely don't want to detract from anyone's less than positive experience with us but, while there are always going to be cases that things get a bit hairy, the vast majority of the time it's smooth sailing and if for whatever reason it's not, then our resolution times are pretty solid. In regard to the transparent proxies, that info is outdated, it's not something we have used for some time.

Hiya I am currently on slingshot fibre. Getting really good speeds and havent had any issues so far with it. Have hardly had any internet outage (maybe once or twice since the beginning of the year). Granted, I use my own fibre modem and not the one supplied by slingshot. The one that was supplied by Slingshot did not meet my needs.

So all in all, a happy Slingshot customer

You are correct those days are gone no more Transparent proxy :)

I am a slingshot customer although an employee and been with the company for 10 years I've happily been a slingshot customer when it comes to expernce I'm no different to customers, if there is an outage I get affected too I still have to call the help-desk although to be honest I can't remember when the last outage was.

Internet speeds are great anytime of the day/night, latency is pretty good although I don't play online games personally I stick to Kerbal Space Program but I do monitor latency to locations in the US and AU and can say the latency is stable and low (within reasonable ranges) as a customer I would recommend slingshot to anyone.

EDIT: Connection 100/50 Unlimited, Region Auckland.

Hi Guys, Slingshot CTO here. We stopped using transparent caching as a result of the Vocus merger - with the merger came the Vocus International Network and more peering that you can shake a stick at. So the caches were surplus to requirements. Of course we have regional CDN nodes in NZ for the major content providers as it makes sense to localise this content as much as possible. We have no International congestion, so if performance is important to you, Slingshot is a pretty good choice in my biased opinion. Cheers.

Been with Sshot for years. Three days ago I went UFB. They gave me a default 50/10 plan. Never hit these speeds but close. Tonight it is 27/8.

27/8 seems to be a 30/10 plan not a 50/10

I don't think Slingshot has ever offered a 50 down plan for fibre, only 30/10, 100/50, or 100/20.

No engineer will ever be unhappy pulling out Bluecoats! Glad to see the back of them we are.....

Chorus recently upgraded all 30/10 plans to 50/10 for free.
