I've only read the last few pages of this thread but I think my intended question - 'Should I get the new box?' - has been answered. I can see no advantage in switching, indeed, there may be several disadvantages, seeing as the old MySky setup does everything I want and I don't need any extra dramas tuning new equipment.

BTW, what's the story if the old MySky boxes break down? Are replacements available?

My father in-laws old one broke we asked for the old type and got sent one, the most challenging part was explaining it to the offfshore contact centre

I guess that the old boxes must be getting passed in as users adopt the new type.

My MySky HDi+ box died in December. Sky quite aggressively pushed the new product which I wasn’t having a bar of given what I’ve read here. They told me that I couldn’t get a new box with a 1Tb drive which I argued strongly about (frankly I’m not sure if the one I got is 1tb), but I’d did get the most up to date model with a HDD. It took them almost 4 bloody weeks (I’m in Dunedin) to get me a working solution. Their customer support was just appalling.

Despite the age of the technology, the new (old) box is smaller and quite a bit more responsive than the one it replaced. The remotes are the same.

I paid $150 for new streaming box and had to return my MySky box. The new box was so problematic and difficult that I managed, after much discussion, to get a MySky box, which turned out to be newer and smaller that my previous one. Tried to get my money back but got no joy there. The 'old' box is still a huge improvement over the new one.

I think Sky will still support the MySky as there are still plenty of customers who don't have fibre broadband and Sky doesn't want to alienate those customers, yet.

My father in law passed away earlier this year and we contacted Sky to arrange the return of his mySky box. They sent an unpadded plastic courier bag for the box to be returned, but it almost felt criminal to just dump a perfectly fine box which had provided years of viewing pleasure into it, so I used some bubble wrap to provide some cushioning and sent it back.

Well, I sent mine back, as you say, in an unpadded box. Lo and behold, Sky returned it to me with a message it was damaged. Why did they send it back? Never got any reply for that.

The dish connector was broken off, I returned it back again.

After much arguing they sent me a working MySky box and all happy.

Yes I think you are probably right. I argued about that because they of course charged me for the upgrade to the original 1tb box, but I wasn’t getting anywhere.

Certainly happy enough with the box they sent me and will stick with it until they sort out the issues with the Fibre based solution.

The reason for the 'unpadded' bag is that it is not addressed to Sky, but to 'IT Recycla' at a Penrose, Auckland address.  Padding is therefore not required as the decoder will be broken up for recyclable materials presumably.

I've had the new box and a Sky Pod for 18 months now - forced over from Vodafone TV. I realise that I'm just used to it all now, and everything they do just seems normal. With the most recent box update, which has the Planner improvements, the overnight "shutdowns" have stopped.

As people always say, it lacks a huge amount of refinements, but it no longer annoys me. We have a non-smart flatscreen TV, and using the box for TVNZ+, Disney+, Prime and Plex makes it into a one-stop shop for us.

YMMV

The great piece of junk did an update during opening ceremony and now displays no satellite connection. Restart and power cycle didn't help.

Can't the update be activated at your convenience instead of just barging in while you're watching something?

I haven't had Sky for years, in fact I think the decoder I had is long since end-of-life, although it would probably still work with the satellite service.

Looking on their website they seem to have a standard set-top box and the puck thing. But is that it? Is My Sky gone now?

MySky definitely still going. We sent back our fibre box and got the MySky box back. Well, a newer, smaller model than we'd previously had.

It was such a good move to det the MySky back. Sky knows there are still lots of customers who don't have fibre yet and still rely on satellite for receiving sky so the MySky box will still be around for a good while.

I was out of the room, when I came back it was on the home screen, so maybe I'm mistaken. Will phone support.

Sky currently offer a 'whitebox' and a 'pod'.  The 'MYSKY' (black PACE decoder) is gradually being replaced by either of the new options.  The whitebox is a direct replacement with both satellite and internet connections and includes MYSKY functionality.  The pod is internet-only (ie streaming only) and is a replacement of the Vodafone TV box.

There are now options that do not require a decoder.  The SKYGO app works through the internet but runs only on Android Or Apple devices (IIRC) and through a browser.  It requires the same subscription as a decoder and offers most (but not all) channels (including the sport channels).  Sky Sport Now is an app that offers only Sky Sports channels and requires its own subscription.  It is internet-only and is available as a TV app (I have it on a Samsung that runs Tizen) as well as Android and Apple versions and is usable through a browser.
