I'd get much much better coverage of World Squash with a $10USD subscription and be able to watch it anywhere, but that's near enough to $15 a month NZD.

I'd bet my bottom dollar Rugby would be $30-50 a month. Would be region locked for sure.

I would greatly appreciate the ability to watch Rugby in HD whilst out of the country. I missed 2 of the Lions tests as a result of not being able to get a live view. had to watch the commentary on my phone. Quite a loss for this significant Rugby fan. Lions tour is maybe 2nd behind WC.

I bet!! Sky Go with a VPN probably would have worked?

So not only can I not get the new packages yet as I get it through Vodafone, I just checked my latest bill and they have removed my free Sky Sport discount which should have been for 12 months from August and now charge me for it. Coincidence that it's at the time of all these billing changes or are they being sneaky after 6 months and hoping people don't check and just let the automatic payment go through?

Great so more bandwidth required, more software, more battery drain, probably less reliable. I just want to be able to login from my App.

I agree it is an example where a monopoly is better. The least desirable result will be having Rugby with one provider, Cricket with another, League somewhere else, etc. The consumer will end up paying more in the long run than someone who currently has Starter + Sport + HD. Just look a premier league (soccer). You now have to pay extra to watch it via BeIN sport, cause Sky lost the rights.

However, Sky have the price points and delivery all wrong. For example, I can get premium drama + a dozen sports channels all in HD on Foxtel Now for A$39 per month. Whereas Fanpass in New Zealand is $99 per month (and a steaming pile of poo at that), and now more expensive that getting connected with a STB. Sky Go isn't in HD, and doesn't have Chromecast support, presumably to protect the revenue from multi room.

The evidence is (Based on IPL, F1, Squash, and other sports, just as it is when all the Cable Providers started their own online services recently charging $10-20 a month per network) that the total cost will be higher.

The facts are that when 10 providers setup their own direct delivery, there is 10 sets of delivery metrics and infrastructure and related costs which need to be met. It's 10 apps, or logins, 10 sets of T&C's 10 sets of region locks that might apply.

One Infrastructure that can deliver 10 sets of content WILL be more efficient. Surely you can see that. It's logical. Evidence already exists that 10 services charging $10-20 each is more expensive than 1 charging $30.

The counterfactual already exists. Sky has an effectual monopoly on sports in NZ. Its known what individual sports charge per user per month. And as others here have advised, its more expensive, and the reasons why

The key is the last sentence. Sky are working on things, I predicted a change when the Sky deal stopped, it happened. Fellett intimated a few months back they are working on things. Their revenue just dropped, but their profit increased due to cost savings. The last sentence in this article says more is coming. I'll predict that they will find a way to let Sky be on more devices, i.e. multiform gives way to a broader SkyGo. They just need to work out how to stop non subscribers using it. If my as yet unboxed IPad Pro 12.9 has a Sky app, that has all that I am subscribed to, thats another nice option. I cant see anything happening with pricing, it needs to be added value from here on

Funny, I just got my 1st bill for my 1st month of Fibre. They charged me $10 extra than what they have on the website. Called Manila again and got it promptly reduced in price. Not very happy with $14.95 P&P of my new router though but its in the T&C's so not much fun to argue about.

Questioned the Sky split of the billing lady, she said it will remain as all one package with Vodafone for the foreseeable future

Sky cannot pull me back with these prices.

I have netflix and free-view, costs me $15 a month, their basic package is free-view with some weak addins that I wouldn't even watch.

Add PLEX into the mix and I'm well in truly sorted.

Their actions of trying to block pirate bay just shows how clueless the are.

Also to comment, these new changes are to attract new customer's not to keep the old. I find this very rude and disrespectful to their current customer's which is in line with how they've always been.

I don't need a provider like that.

Sky, I think people dislike you as much as we all used to dislike old Telecom.

A monopoly taking a long ride into the sunset of the forgotten.

Wow, thats a lot of anger, with a sprinkle of incorrect information.

1. Weak add ons that you wouldn't even watch. Other people think otherwise. Its about them, not you

3. Who decided as fact that this is not to keep old customers? You state that as fact, you are sadly mistaken. Had you read the news you would know people are leaving Sky. Any changes that reduce the price for some people may get them as a new subscriber, get them back, or stop them from leaving. Its pretty obvious.

4 Monopoly?? You talk Netflix, so clearly Sky is not a monopoly. Or is Basic, which is all you mentioned a monopoly? There have been competition for years. Had you mentioned sport you could argue they have a monopoly, on most sports, although there is nothing to stop anyone else.

Fair enough. A question of semantics but I'm prepared to agree with you. I didn't use the term to make it sound better or worse than piracy, it's merely the word that I used in a stream of consciousness when I was typing.

It is a waste of time to compete with "bootleg", as you call it. It is a no win game competing with pirates because they drive the price towards zero and drive the convenience as high as they can given their minimal overheads and no need to meet contractual obligations. Consumers who use pirated products generally prefer not to pay anything if they can avoid it, which is generally why they are doing it in this situation. That behaviour wouldn't change even if Sky had no ads.

Whether they like it or not, they are in competition with pirated product, which for many people is a direct alternative to the paid product. It is definitely not a waste of time competing with free. Clearly they can't compete just on price, as you are correct that undercutting zero is a bit hard. But they can compete. They need to do so on the basis of quality, accessibility (easy to find something, easy to play it, easy to pay for it), at a reasonable price.

Spotify and Pandora have shown that if you offer a good range, at a reasonable price, with a good interface and a pleasant all round experience then people will pay instead of pirate. Reasonable and comprehensive music streaming has been credited with driving a big drop in user piracy. Sure, there are some inveterate pirates, but many people want to do the right thing, and will pay instead of pirate, if the value proposition is there.

Which was kind of my point. Sky need to compete by doing more than slicing and dicing their channel packages, and juggling their prices. They need to focus on value add and making their product as nice to use and as attractive as possible compared to competing offerings - including pirated content. Constant ads and promos in programming, which are annoying and which legal and illegal competitors don't put into the programming, should in my view be one thing they should do.

Certainly, they *have* to do it if they want to retain me as a customer.
