ALTRON:

Id like to check the quality of SSN. They mention a top video bitrate of 8Mb which sounds great.

They mention "To check out our video quality, go to our website and try the available highlights. You just need to register first but don't have to purchase anything."    I have registered but cant find any highlight footage to demo .

I’ve just signed up for SSN and I’m really happy with it. I used to use Sky go about 18 months ago and it was dreadful but so far this has been absolutely flawless. I’m on a good 100/100 fibre connection with DTS playing to a 65” tv from a Nuc. I’ve just come from Rugbypass which I was pretty happy with but it did buffer occasionally (like once an hour once I found you could ditch the VPN once it started). Overall I feel rugbypass might have been a Tiny bit sharper, SSN claims to be 1080 but it feels more like 720p to me but perhaps that’s just the content I’ve watched is actually only broadcast at 720, I don’t know.

The app on iPad works well so far but I’ve only played with it a little but I’ve watched two full rugby matches at prime time (both started 30 minutes late due to life and I love the ability to do that) and they have both been 100% flawless.

For me with Sky I just couldn’t justify it as we didn’t watch any other content and even with sport we watch nothing but rugby. I can justify $10 a week to watch a Canterbury provincial or super rugby game and the odd week with a that AND an all black match......just. I love to know how much is the cost of buying rights and how much is the lease of the satellite bandwidth as I’d like to think the streaming option should be less than the Satellite but in some ways they are charging us more. Yeah we don’t have to buy the basic package but we pay $40 for sport rather that the $32 add on for sport that you pay for STB Sky. And they don’t have to provide us an STB and we aren’t using the very expensive satellite.

Hopefully eventually their lease on the satellite will be up for renewal and they’ll get it cheaper but I can’t claim to know the realities of satellite transponder leasing.

As others have said hopefully the purchase of rugbypass will lead to some tech sharing and even better some economies of scale for their streaming tech and licensing (I’m picking both are using NeuLion.) I was managing to get RP for $3Usd per month until they ended that deal - mine ran out a day or two before the 2nd Bledisloe test and I didn’t realise until I went to watch it with a mate round and we had to jump in the car and high tail it to his house as he has Sky, luckily he’s only round the corner so didn’t even miss the anthems.

I just asked on the SSN live chat and according to the support person I was speaking to, they don't have any content that can be watched without a sub. Weekly for $19.99 is the cheapest.

It would be a good idea to have a few clips that could be watched for people to test with. If the quality is as it appears, it will only be positive.

I use SkyGo its not dreadful. You could have used the STB.

Syre, the streaming option will be cheaper than satellite, but as people move from satellite to streaming you can run the business by charging satellite users an extra $30 just because there are less of them. The business has to be run as a single enterprise, with prices that users are happy with.

You cant compare the add-on Sport price with SSN. You could take Basic + Sport add-on, deduct say $10 for Basic and compare that.

They just re signed another 10 years on the satellite.

He's only around the corner so he drive to you?  :-)

Im now watching SkySportNow, flicking between MySky and Apple TV. Very nice image, BUT there is motion blur that is not on Sky Satellite. Often a slow moving golf ball it judders, then comes right.Players close up walking are not smooth. Netball was the same, you can tel its not satellite. When the golf ball sails to the green, the green is full of artifacts for a second or so. I feel that as Spark Sport was with F1, these sports would be better on that then Sky satellite.. I base that on F1 being better on Spark Sport than Sky satellite. Sky streaming is falling short on that. I have the week pass

Pause seemed flakey, this is on ATV4, so no FF/RW. Pause often would not work, or would not play. Go back to the same channel, all working fine. Saw this all through my half hour messing round. Sometimes the pause would resume correctly, sometimes it seemed to resume live, instead of next frame.

Undecided as yet on this. Its not as good as Sky Satellite. Spark Sport was better than Sky satellite, before the FPS issues, but that was on F1. Unsure of the other sports, they often seemed very variable.

Bit the bullet and bought a one off one month pass last night for $49.  Was going to go straight in with the 12 months at $39 but thought I should trial it for a month first and see what I thought.  Figure I needed a month to really get a good idea over several different broadcasts at several different times etc.

Watched the last day of the Black Caps test.  Noticed that it is juddery on 1080p and 720HD but went well on 720p, and for me it was a good picture.  We have 100/20 fiber with 2D and I was running it through Chrome on an NUC via ethernet.

What's with the volume levels though?  Had to have the volume up more than normal to hear the commentary and then the odd ad that was on there blasted the house down.

I'm happy to trial it for a month for that price then will see whether I commit for a 12 month term at the end of that period.

Will be a lot easier to run (for my much better half) than ESPN+ through DNS4Me with lashings of whatever I can find from the internet for free to top it up.

Was going to trial Kayo but never got around to sorting an Aussie mobile number to sign up with.

How did you choose the res? I only got it last night. Not too fussed on the ATV4 effort. Artifacts on the cricket foeld, as I saw on golf last night, not smooth, nice image though. Just had a test with SkyGo and SSN on iPad Air 1 with the Ashes replay. Smoother and less juddery, although its probably the same just less noticeable on a 9.7 screen. SSN is sharper, but SkyGo is pretty good. I felt motion blur on the cricket ball was a tickle better on SkyGo. Ill do these Airplay to my plasma tonight.

Where are the replays?????????????????????? There are SFA on the app. Its been out for two weeks there should be plenty. I don't expect full replays of the cricket, but I do expect full replays of all games from all channels, for a few weeks.

At $40 for SSN and I assume $95 for full Sky, where I do have an interest in the doco channels, Im favouring full Sky right now. If SSN was a better feed, such as F1 was on Spark Sport, and if RW/FF was fully in place, and if they had a correct wardrobe of replays, I'd be happy with SSN full time.

What I am seeing is, that crap, BS, out of date, sh!t 1980's tech does in fact rule. In quality and in featureset

There was a cog bottom right of the player (similar to YouTube) which let me pick from a whole bunch of resolutions.

I might have missed something obvious, but how do I purchase a week/month pass from within the app? (Android). I'm logged in, and it tells me "my account does not have access to this content", but doesn't give me any way to buy a pass from there.
