If Sky are providing the filming infrastructure, then Amazon would simply have to pay for them for using the service they're providing them.

Alternatively, Amazon would have to set up their own infrastructure.

Probably not a question that needs an answer. I think that if Amazon were to win the All Black rights, then in all likelihood its game over for Sky.

Not ideal, but how many AB games are there per year? Not many. many dont follow rugby too, they follow the many other sports available. But it would be interesting, as to cost, and how the masses cope with streaming live sport

Theres nothing special about a requirement needed to do outside broadcasts and production of games. The average "little" local tv station in the U.S probably has more trucks and broadcast vans than OSB do here.

I doubt Sky would film it so that Amazon can stream it. Amazon would need to run their own filming and commentary, and pre and post match shows, and pay for CDN infrastructure and use. And the rights. Can't escape the costs. Or go cheap and just film it/stream it and buy a radio commentary to go with it.

I think that if Amazon got the Online Rugby rights (not a given, Sky has a pretty large war chest I believe), they would do some sort of deal with Sky.

Sky may still have broadcast rights (but at a cheaper price to them), Amazon may sell Sky broadcast rights, Amazon would then pay Sky to film/commentate etc (may some sort of contra deal). There would still be revenue in it for Sky I think, and it may be profitable revenue.

It's far more likely that Amazon would get Co-Broadcaster rights, with primary rights being provided to Sky so it can cater for it's viewers who wish to continue viewing the way they do now, and Amazon would get a license, potentially from Sky, which broadcast the Sky content via it's own digital platform. I suspect there way even be a delay on the Amazon stream of say 20-40 minutes.

NZ Rugby needs Sky, Amazon wouldn't invest in the local games to the same degree and couldn't or likely wouldn't provide the same level of support to the non-test matches.

A friend has just been to Rarotonga and returned with an amusing story: Her SkyGo account wouldn't work in Raro. To watch Game of Thrones she had to call a friend back in NZ who rigged up a mount for a tablet, so that they could point it at the TV and stream GoT over FaceTime.

This sort of thing shouldn't be necessary in this day and age!

I'll say, I'd suggest your friend needs to see someone that her addiction to a TV Episode would lead her to such extremes. She can watch GOT anywhere, you can only be in Raro when you are in Raro.

To try to be back on topic, Sky are complaining the piracy is the reason they are losing significant subscriber numbers. Although they will state commercial sensitivity, firstly where is the proof that this statement is more than anecdotal and secondly which part of the business do they believe it is affecting?

For example, are they losing subs because "Movies" or "TV" type subscribers are leaving or is it because "Sport" subscribers are leaving. At the end of the day, consumers have a budget of entertainment dollars - it's got nothing to do whether Sky is or is not actually value for money, it's whether the consumers feel it is the best value for money.

In respect to the OSB question, Sky could operate it as a separate business and sell the "re-broadcast" rights to whoever wants to buy them - whether that is Sky or Amazon or TVNZ etc. Unbundle the recording from the distribution - like Spark and Chorus had to.

Procrastination eventually pays off.
