NZtechfreak: Yup, we'll see - I'm adding my shipito address to my credit card as an alternate address to see whether that works (Newegg suggest that).

EDIT: Just got off phone from the bank. They added the address as my primary billing address, had no problems whatsoever, I just explained that I needed the address that way to make a purchase from the States and required billing and shipping addresses to match. So should be all set now. Including shipping (1 one day shipping from Amazon to the US addy, then Fedex international priority to here) and exchange rates, the total should be about $700NZ. Wow.

Nice.

I will be doing the same, but will wait until Thursday 3rd December, and will pay lump sum cash via my debit card (I don't have a credit card and I don't want to tick this up)...hopefully I don't miss the best deals, I'll be happy with that $480US price tag.

$700 all up, cheap as chips, especially for a just released top of the line mobile/tablet like this.

Is Shipito considered 'safe'? I'd hop in that Amazon deal right now if I knew I wasn't going to get gypped by a 3rd party.

Well, plenty of people online have good things to say about them, and my first purchase has gone swimmingly.

Their CEO is in Auckland at the end of December actually, I'm arranging a meet with him, so if it turns pear shaped he will be held accountable!

Engadget just reported Amazone's US$480 pre-order.

http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/20/nokia-n900-drops-to-480-on-amazon-pre-order/

That's about NZD$670, I'm tempting but as I said, I'm not that adventurous to order from US Amazon especially with the need of US billing address. Any keen soul wanna be my "guarantor" if you're getting one for yourself, I'll piggyback on your postage?

Amazons price is 529$ US. which equates to 730$ NZ, while customs may let that slide thru without 12.5% charge, i doubt they'd let twice that go thru.

The rebate is assigned to the packing slip no. so doubt it could be claimed from twice for the rebate. I'd also assume it would only go to the account who made the original payment.

Hmm... I am just not sure (and not that trusting) with one of those US-address-sending-service-providers, you know. What's the threshold of the NZ Customs Duty Fee and/or GST?

That just confirms what we already knew and I posted 2 days ago, simply by looking at the Amazon website.

And to be honest, while its nice to help people, do you think its fair to ask someone else to take all the risk (importing from a US site requiring US address/billing etc) and pay all the shpping so you can have it easy and reap the rewards?

Not being rude mate but ya gota be willing to take some of the risk and meet half the shipping costs at least.

Well I have followed NZtechfreak's method and ordered a N900 from Amazon. Setting up a shipito account was straight forward and changing my credit card address was simple too. (The bank understood exactly why I wanted to change my address and were really helpful I might add)

Only problem I came across was when I was choosing the shipping method on Amazon it tells me the item will not arrive before 25 Dec! I went ahead and ordered it anyway, but was wondering if other's who have ordered their's got the same message?

After all this waiting I certainly hope the N900 lives up to expectations!

I thought it was $50, so that means $400 value.  Not sure if there's duty on cellphones, but I don't think so.

They'll collect when the value of the goods is $400 or greater. There's also a $30 collection fee.

If the package is marked as 'gift' you won't have to pay GST on the first $110 of the item.

Regards GST - with shipito you are the one who determines what is on the customs declaration.

The Dec 25th thing is just because they don't have a firm date, it avoids disappointment for prospective buyers. It is expected to start shipping to buyers soon.

And what happens if it goes missing en route and you've valued it low?

well i guess that's the risk you would take at valuing something lower than it's actually worth
