guys

1. Does the Nokia 5800 have the ability to do a persistant reminder e.g. if a txt or msg comes in and I didn't have the handset withme can it be setup to continously beep to let me know a msg is waiting ?

2. What comparable handsets have a better camera e.g the LG GT505 ?

Yes it will (at least it can) continue to flash the light on the middle (white) button to show there is a message waiting.

The absence of a audible alert function for the 5800 is a pain. The flashing light is inadequate.

Also it would be good if you could charge it via USB when it is hooked up to your PC.

Re: audible alerts - 'There's an app for that' :-) Google 'unread SMS reminder', or look on Ovi store. Personally I find audible reminders can get really annoying for other people, flashing light is perfect for me.

I agree about the USB charging though.

I've installed lots of 'approved' apps from Ovi Store (right from the handset itself), most of them are 3rd party. I've also installed non-'approved' apps from my PC. Discretion is advised but I've had no major issues.

I read on gsmarena http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_5800_xpressmusic-review-308.php that not many Symbian S60 v5 apps exist and that many v3 apps have issues on a v5 platform. Do you have txt reminder running on yours or did so ?

Are apps from Ovi store free ?

There are many apps available for S60v5 now, most of the best 3rd edition ones are now available, along with some exclusives for S60v5 too - the 5800 review was from the when the 5800 had just come out and was the first and only S60v5 phone.

Some Ovi store apps are free, there is a lot of freeware available at places like Symbian-freak.com too, take a look and see whats out there.

As an aside - its best to hack your handset, as more apps are available that way. The reason being that some need 'signing' in order to work on your phone, and for hacked handsets thats easy to do. Hacking does not harm the phone in any way, instructions and assistance can be found at Symbian-freak if you're curious (I've owned about 5 Symbian handsets and hacked the lot of 'em).

FYI, the 5800 will never support charging via USB, it is a hardware limitation, not software, so no amount of software hacking or upgrade will allow this.

Correct.

Many of the phones behaviours in terms of UI/functionality are up for alteration though via apps or modding (another plus of hacking the handset).

I'm also looking at the 5800 on Vodafone. Currently have a LG GC900f on Telecom which I hate to admit was a mistake to buy, but we live and learn.
Noel Leeming here has the 5800 for $499. Is that a good deal.

499 sounds good to me. My saudi arabian 5800 cost me 470 from parallel imported. 29 for a user manual in english?

You can get it for about $417 from a parallel importer, so no, that isn't a particularly good deal.
