Hi,

I'm thinking of picking up a 5800 for $470 from parallel imported. Any opinions on the 5800 or an alternative in this price bracket?

I mainly want a phone with WIFI for internet, also it should work with 2degrees. I may take it to the states, so if it works there that would be best.

Thanks!

Dale

The vodafone version of the 5800xm (900/2100mhz 3g) works fine on 2degrees. Be aware though that the settings sent by 2degrees for the internet APN on it were wrong for me (Had a proxy set when it should not have) So if you find the internet APN won't work, then check that. Worked fine after correcting the settings.

The 5800 is great value, very hard to beat in that price bracket. The N82 is also very nice, with one of the best camera's on a mobile out there, if that is a consideration (of course its 2.4inch screen and QVGA resolution is quite dated now).

I was gonna buy a 5800 but ended up buying an N97.

Check these guys (http://www.einfo.co.nz/shop/product_info.php?products_id=14273), better pricing than Parallel Imported

The 2degrees settings download is fixed now. Would be happy to recommend the phone for the price; also I think it has the best built in speakers for music, bar none.

Ok, but the n97 is getting on twice the price of the 5800, which is a bit out of my enthusiasm range.

Which is why I can't afford a decent freeview box now :-)
Expert Infotech are definitely worth a look, either on-line or in person. Their pricing is very sharp!

If you're comparing 5800 pricing, make sure you check whether the memory card is included or not; it only has <100Mb on the phone, so without the 8GB card you'll be pretty limited as to what you can do...

Hmmm, yes the 5mp camera on the n82 looks nice. Otherwise the phones seem to be similar, with the 5800 winning on display, audio and price.  I'm tempted, but I think the 5800 is winning right now.

It is included on parallelimported, at least.

Thinking back, my N97 didn't come with a microSD card, I already owned it.

Ok, I bought the phone from parallelimported. Their site made the purchase nice and simple.

I've only had the phone for a little while, but my initial impressions (smartphone noob):

- nice screen, seems ok in sunlight, if not great
- touchscreen works fine
- sounds nice!
- accepted my 2degrees SIM without incident

The included 8G sdhc card actually works fine in my wife's Nokia 5130, (now I just need to get it back).

My version came with bonus Quran and Prayer Times applications, and the user manual in Arabic. Strange that the manual isn't in the usual 14 languges! Never mind found the manuals online.

don't forget the n82 has xenon flash which makes a HUGE difference in low light conditions, this is a killer feature

Yeah, the camera on the 5800 is not one if the highlights, but not an issue for me.

Further explorations:

- WIFI on the home network works great!
- Replaced the Quran with http://olivetree.com/m Bible Reader software, looks good, if KJV!
- Tried out Fring with a skype videocall, worked, but seemed to be more laggy than a laptop+skype over the same WIFI. I wonder whether the Fring middleman server is causing the lag problem.
- The email options on s60v5 are confusing. Messaging, Nokia Messaging (email), Mail For Exchange... Currently sticking with Messaging which seems to work fine, leaving my mail on the pop3 server to be downloaded to my main desktop.
- Firmware in NZ seems to be lagging a bit, v31 is available elsewhere, but does not appear as an upgrade option, my handset has v21.
