... Yes, turn by turn nav works well. ...

How recent is your phone?

Did it ever say you needed to purchase the navigation license?  If so, how did you manage to get it to switch to the freee navigation.  I bought my phone in Feb, but it was a parallel imported version which was clearly one of the earlier 5800XM models (only had v2 firmware).

Upgraded it to v4 & installed Maps 3 OK, but still have not got free navigation to work :(.

The other problem I have yet to solve is how to enter a destination.  It I specify an address, it just says it cannot locate it?

I would be interested to know your experience.

Bought the phone from parallel imported back in January, upgraded from v2 to v4 like you. I just upgraded to the new ovi maps when it came available, just works. Locating stuff works fine, generally.  e.g my home address is not located, it finds across the road instead. I installed the nz maps using the ovi software from PC.

Used it to nav to a birthday party out-of-town yesterday.

ahmad: So there anything a standalone GPS navigation device do that a Nokia with Ovi maps can't?

Apart from having a bigger screen?

And how good are the map/directions?

Map and directions work fine in Christchurch. Reroute is almost instantaneous on wrong turns. I just use the directions while driving, these are excellent, no need to look at the map.

Perfectly adequate GPS nav solution in my opinion.

I have also finally figured out that you need to "slide right to left" to stop alarms in firmware 40. Tricky one, so THAT is what that sliding colour graphic meant! I hammered stop for ages with no effect, someone has been a little too clever on this one.

rofl...good to hear i wasn't the only one whose alarm kept going and going :)

My sis file is "nokia_maps_3.01_09wk44_b01_s60_5.0_lm_rom.sis" so I guess it is not the latest.

Went to check for any update, but first having to update the updater!  Will see what happens once that is done.

Thanks

I just have updated it to 3.03.  A big improvement!

Much better interface, but I am still having problems entering a destination.

While the GPS reports addresses correctly, I do not seem able to get the navigation sw to recognise the addresses I enter; eg

While it will locate 'Burgess Rd' (Johnsonville), it will not locate '16 Burgess Rd'.  Similarly with other addresses;  ie. does not seem to locate an address if I have a number in front of the street.

Ah - I see.  It requires the address in the form 'Street Name' 'Number'.  Strange, because it shows the located address as 'Number' 'Street Name'.

A couple of other issues .

1. It seems to search online to locate an address, despite having the maps loaded on the memory card.
Can I change the behaviour so it does not need to go online to locate an address?

2. What setting do I need to change to stop the screen blanking out when it is in Navigation mode (assuming it does.  Until just now, I have not got it to stay in Navigation mode for more than a minute or so.)

3. Do you normally have the phone on a charger while using it for navigation (eg on a long trip)?

4. I assume that voice entry of an address is not possible? (yet!)

Turn off A-GPS and Network, and yes you can search in offline mode.

I turn off 3g to conserve power, and I also have a car charger for those long trips :)
