Gilco2: I have almost given up on tivo. Reading all trouble people have with them. I had bought 2, 4 months back. Used 1 of them other as spare for 2 months before using it as I liked it. Well the first 1 went into a reboot loop. Switch power off for hour then start up and goes through startup to the how wonderful tivo is and reboots. Left off for 10 hours start up works fine for 4 hours then reboot loop again. May be great idea and functions but I want better reliability

You have aerial signal problems. Not the TiVo ;)

He, not according to consumer who said tivo is rubbish due to high power consumption. Didn't matter that it's functionality is great.?

That had to be the worst review ever. They were actually reviewing STBs, so they were comparing apples with oranges, as a tivo is a PVR. I believe MySky ranked about the same as the tivo in terms of power consumption. Obviously something that can record to a hard drive is going to use more power, duh.

They didn't even consider the TiVo continuously records programs, hence more power usage than the STBs.

But hey, some people still read reviews on Stuff or NZ Herald, so not far fetched to have them reading Consumer...

What still amazes me is the almost total lack of promotion of Tivo by Hybrid, price and feature wise it was kills the competition. Hybrid could be on to a good thing if they done a half way good job of promoting the product

if thats the case why did this work perfect for 4 months and why is the second unit working fine. TV in lounge is working fine also.
On the Tivo in settings and signal quality it shows quality 100 and has peak 100.

See, now this user just illustrates just how the TiVo turns a normally healthy geek into a babbling head case who should be referred to a professionally trained MHS.... in short, he's gone bonkers and all because of the TiVo.

A healthy geek would know that the fault is likely caused by a software corruption and the unit needs to be reflashed or some other fairly normal sort of minor fault that's causing irregular behavior.

But the geek has become stressed, it's likely that he's enduring bombardment "hunny, the video thing isn't working properly again!, I missed 30 seconds of shortland street... dad... dad... dad.... like, like, my life is over and it's all your fault.... I missed top model, I don't know if jemma will win... waaaaaaaaaaa waaaaa peppa pig is missing... waaaa waaa".

The fact that his family could catch up all their shows on demand is just not the point, his mental state is now compromised all because the 1's and 0's have lost their chie.

Another user, earlier, wrote about his TiVo dieing after 8 months. Now he lives his life in fear that its replacement will fail and he will have to settle for a Tbox or mySky unit.

Do you see my point?

TiVo should be avoided, the risk of disappointment though loss is worse than loosing a loved one... well, actually, clearly the TiVo just becomes a loved one.

Definitly do not get a tivo. If you do you'll end up with a remote that is comfy and functional. Your better half is only gonig to keep chewing your ear on how useless all your other remotes are..moan moan moan I cant use the tv remote. Moan moan I cant use the dvd remote, why arent they like the tivo. Bleat bleat bleat _ you have been warned

My jaw dropped when the missus' response to the Tivo remote was "once you try black, you don't go back"! I'm worried she's going to demand that we move to the GC...

ya I have to confess that when I first saw the remote I was like "OMG could that thing be any bigger?!?!"...

...but it's size is one of the coolest aspects. It's the one remote that doesn't get lost under the covers. It's well layed out and puts the features I found useful one single buttons.

It's a well thought out bit of kit.

Well it was promoted initially by telecom....but it wasn't until it started being sold in big box retailers that also sold tvs, and they cut the price, did people actually start buying them in larger numbers.

And thats another health issue. I'm on medication to help me with the guilt I often experience when I think about other PVR owners. I got my first Tivo for $300 at $10 a month. That was when they were on the market at telecom retail for around $800. My second one was free and I got $100 cash for my troubles. That was when NL came in at around $300 a tivo. I am so shamed I paid well below retail that I suspect I'll need therapy for a while yet.

I can take one off your hands for you if you think this will help your guilt. I suspect that that will just lead to a bout of remorse though...

Since moving to Mediaportal (we had a few S1 Tivos for a few years), there are still times that I miss the remote, and, the suggestions that Tivo gave us.
