From the MythTV wiki:-

My Listings grabber is set to "Over-the-air" guide (EIT)

Default for the option below option is "not checked" but on mine it is "Checked" and working fine. (And so are others)

xmltv Selections

Perform EIT scan, Not Checked

If enabled, program guide data for channels on this source will be updated with data provided by the channels themselves 'Over-the-Air'. This is a choice to be made depending on the reliability of over the air data. There is the potential for getting last minute program updates if this is reliable.

with mythtv can you insert bluray disk, press play and watch yet. I cant find recent news on it. Don't want to have to rip a disc each time want to watch bluray

Regarding: Vu+ Duo2 -5 Tuner HD Satellite + Terrestrial Receiver + Internet Streaming + PVR [mentioned above]

...Still looks a promising compromise, but obviously only able to record 1xHD (unless it can do multiple on that same tuner)

Q.How does the terrestrial part work, Is it integrated or just from a USB dongle plugged in?

A. The DVB-T2 is a Dongle input. It comes up in the menu as Tuner E. The DVB-S2 there are 4 of these tuners which fit the 4 tuner slots. Everything is setup to receive everything beamed to New Zealand off Satellite and also Terresrial. You can do scans as well and these are put into the last scanned folder. Any thing you like you can move into the Bouquets of each Satellite. Can record 5 channels at once on different TPs and more than 5 if some on the same TP. This is an amazing Receiver.

Q.Thank you for the in depth Answer. So for the terrestrial side, does the dongle provide another epg? and recording from it? and is it able to do series linking etc?

A. YES to all your questions. I have just uploaded 3 more images showing the EPG on the Terrestrial FreeviewHD. The menu with repeated action-ed and the (R) on the time line indicating in this case it was the next one up. You will see in the menu that you can set a pre and a post end times to make sure you don't miss a complete recording eg when TV stations may over run times programmed.

Thanks , that is interesting. I thought that was one of the things that freeview approved boxes wouldn't allow, as I recall there was a reason why the tivo was never freeview approved, and used the freeview EPG over the air. If they had done that, it wouldn't have left consumers in the current situation. I will have to look into that further as to how easy it is to transfer files. That said, Tivo has a whole heap of tools that make it reasonably easy to do over the network, and between tivo units which generally worked very well.

Hi dumb question here...is there any way to one-time copy all the contents of your tivo to a PC or say a external harddrive without buying the networking package?

If not, is this a business opportunity for enthusiasts that have the package (copying other people's Tivos for them for a small fee)

I need to rescue the Brendon McCullum highlight reels and other gems before the box gets recycled...

No, that is why you needed the HNP, not unless someone has worked out a way. Not sure what happens if you take the drive out of the tivo and put it into a PC, whether the PC can read tivos files as video, or whether they are encrypted?

That doesn't tell you whether your Sony TV is receiving that data over EIT or over MHEG.

However Terrestrial Freeview in NZ does have 7 to 8 days EPG over EIT. It didn't to begin with but has been added. Most (all?) Freeview approved devices will use MHEG, but that doesn't detract from the fact that the EIT is there.

Those that want a set top box, I would look for a VU+ box that does DVB-T - they have the advantage that you can watch from any Kodi machine in your house.

All good info. But while its a geek interest, I'd rather keep a PC out of it. Im wondering what STB's may pop up between now and then? Many just want an STB that just works. Cliche I know, and I can do all this but TBH I cant really be bothered. But I can see an opportunity here for someone. To give an ease of use Panny experience, but with a few extras?

Take the tivo drive out and put into a windows machine = kiss it good bye, reason, the tivo image is a custom linux install and encrypted. Windows while attempting to "see" the drive will corrupt the boot record.
