I'm not interested in being an early 4K adopter.

*chuckle* How about "I'm not interested in being anywhere on the leading edge with 4K, but might reconsider when broadcast TV goes 4K".

Not gonna happen anytime soon, which does rather raise a separate discussion.

I've opted not to replace our TiVo and will see what that means in practise come October.

I see lots of reference to being able to copy the content off, but I'm also really struggling to get my head around what exactly one would want that badly from free to air broadcast TV?

With UFB and Netflix etc becoming available in NZ, our household at least is watching less and less broadcast TV, and the quality of the on demand content is improving all the time, especially when compared to the blocky mess it was originally.  We hardly watch anything from broadcast TV, (survivor plays for the ladies in our house, the news? - showing content I've read on stuff all day long) and will now opt for 4K content when available.  For this reason, I'm seriously not that worried about losing a recorder device anymore, which has come as a surprise to myself even.

Broadcast TV can go and die a slow death in the corner as far as I'm concerned.  That whole model of full blown BS viewer statistics justifying advertising costs is just so out of touch with where viewers are heading, it's very much aligned to the Sky discussions on other threads, with their must pay $50 'basic package' to even be able to purchase the sport addons you want.  These guys really really need to go and check out the audio world, and ask how their CD's and MP3 sales are going nowadays?

A lot of programs are never broadcast again. When TVNZ 7 was in operation, there was quite a lot of specially made content for that, which I suspect will never see the light of day again, except possibly of skys heartland channel.

stocksp: I see that plex is now offering live tv as well as dvr, so this could be a solution for some

I saw that announcement too via email but when I click on see channels available in your area, you can indeed click on NZ, but it says there are no FTA channels available. ??? Not sure what the point of it is announcing it if they haven't actually got any channels available?

Another nail in the coffin, TiVo Genie appears to be no more!  Just went to set a season pass remotely.  Logged in fine but as soon as I clicked the Genie button it came up with the message "No devices available for scheduling.  It seems that we are not quite ready for you to use TiVo Genie."

Of course it could be a 'short term glitch' <cough!><cough!>

In my defence I only use Genie a handful of times a year when at work and read about something to record and set it before I forget.

Has anyone had any success contacting Hybrid / Tivo  to report problems? I didn't get any response to my last email via their website. I wonder if their 0800 phone number is still going to Spark?

Confirmed Genie is working for me too.  Unless it was a known, easy to fix glitch I'm genuinely surprised they bothered to resolve it.

This is very gutting! While I don't have one personally, I do know several people with them - in fact I helped a few people buy them when Telecom gave the whole thing up - $200 was an absolute bargain for what the device was (and still is).

Without trawling through the nearly 50 pages in this thread, could someone summarize for me what the general consensus is on the best Freeview|HD decoder/recorder to buy to replace the TiVo? I've used a few on and off and not found any of them to be as easy to use as the TiVo.
