Just wondering if thew TiVo activation system has already finished. Ran up my spare TiVo today to set it up before the service finishes. Went thru the setup OK and tuned all the channels but said was not activated and to go to the activation page on mytivo.co.nz Went there and added in the new serial number and then did another connection to TiVo service and download. After 30 minutes still showed as not activated. Last time I did this back in 2011 when I changed my unit to a new one I seem to remember it was pretty much instant.. I suspect that this one will be a STB after shutdown as will the existing one as my Sony TV bought in 2007 only has an analog tuner. Must start saying to the finance committee that the existing one is 10 years old and should be replaced. Only problem is this one apart from the fact of tuner works great..

I managed to move a Tivo onto my account a few weeks ago, that went through fine without drama. So as long as the Tivo was deregistered then you should be able to register it.

I bought it off someone here in GZ so who knows if it was deregistered before hand. It dos show up in my account so I would assume it wouldn't allow me to register it if it was still active. Will put it on in a day or two and see.

If it is currently showing up on your TiVo account then it was still activated to or has been re-activated to your account. All should be fine after awhile for one to catch up with the other.

Thanx.. I suspect unless the one I'm using now dies this one won't get used until post "Death Day"

I'm pretty sure the last one I activated (last year) took a while to show up. It wasn't instantaneous, I recall that.

I read a bit further and noticed top right of page 24 is the bullet point "The series recording will be cancelled if there has been no episode of the series for 13 weeks". Using TiVo terminology does this mean if a Season Pass is set and a season finishes and doesn't restart till after 13 weeks the Season Pass itself is deleted and won't record subsequent episodes of the new season?

Guess there's a few of us who are also researching on behalf of parents and other friends/family etc... for the most comparable replacement to TiVo.

Hmmmm... I hadn't spotted that 'feature'. For some people it might make sense, but for me (as an example) I would like all Doctor Who episodes and "Air Crash Investigation" episodes to record for as many years as the unit is operational.

I quite understand about the 'buying for relatives', as one of my colleagues has picked one of these Panny units up for rellies as well recently. In that case, just like mine, the Panny unit is in a secondary location so the rellies can get use to it before it gets put onto the main TV.

I ended up contacting Panasonic NZ with a product query which resulted in an email response and phone call from a helpful rep. Basically there is indeed a limit on the number of 'season passes' you can have of 32. They also say if a season of a particular series finishes it will automatically remove itself from the series recording so you have to manually set the new season to record when it reappears in the EPG. Although not ideal, Panasonic have released a keyword search feature new this year similar to TiVo so it's possible to fudge a season pass with a keyword search i.e. series title. The unit will automatically record episodes matching the keywords.

The good news is if there's a recording conflict this unit will apparently attempt to record from a +1 channel or a repeat screening of that particular episode on another day. Basically the Freeview EPG transmits series and episode ID's so if the first screening can't be recorded the unit will hunt out another screening of that same episode if available. It won't record duplicates of the same episode either as it searches the internal HDD for a recording with the same episode ID. If found it won't record repeats, if not found it will record however if you've watched an episode then deleted it the system will record a repeat as no longer exists on the HDD. To me sounds like not deleting viewed recordings for a couple of weeks will get around this issue.

We may be returning to NZ in the next year or so. Spoiled by U.S. TiVo and sorry to hear that they're bailing out of NZ.

I've read through most of this thread, but some of it is a bit dated now so I'm a bit confused as to what our options will be and what the experts here will be doing.

I'd really appreciate a quick tutorial and what's recommended...or if there's a link to a thread or site comparing services that would be welcome as well.

I doubt we'll see Tivo back in NZ and Australia unless they make the offer incredibly attractive financially. Why would I want to spend money on a new Tivo? The brand is damaged in this country already due to the previous rollout being botched. The remaining enthusiasts who could have been the ambassadors for a new Tivo rollout have been screwed over by the service being shut down on them, leaving perfectly good devices that had to be discarded. I think the majority of us would have paid a subscription to keep them going, but most of us have already replaced the existing boxes in advance of the October 31 shutdown.

Personally, I have paid NZ$350 (discounted price) on a Panasonic DVR with similar features to our Series 3 Tivos, but with more storage and it also has network streaming options. It's not quite as user-friendly as the Tivo, but it's perfectly adequate. I would have happily paid to upgrade to a newer Tivo, but that money is now spent and is not available to spend on a Tivo upgrade.

That pretty much sums me up too. I'd have been a huge TiVo brand ambassador (quietly I still am) but with no future of TiVo in NZ in sight I'll sadly be moving on. I haven't replaced mine yet but the Panasonic DVR @Dynamic mentions is likely how I'll go when they're next on sale at a decent price somewhere as time is on my side - for now.

I've seen the Dish TV DVRs in action - they do what they say on the box but seem underpowered and sluggish to me compared with my series 3 TiVo which is now 8 years old!

Am also contemplating a home made option using open source DVR solutions such as MythTV. Although feature rich by the time I mess about getting suitable hardware, installing, testing, stuffing it up and reformatting, reinstalling and testing again I'll likely end up spending more and end up frustrated.

Sadly there's not much in the way of options out there for the NZ market.

Its a pity they didnt have Netflix on there as well, as Netflix beats all the others hands down right now.

and I'm sure others would have paid for Netflix on tivo ??

I tried Quickflix that they had on there a couple of times but it wasn't streaming, was download then watch..

I am actually not seeing the need for one anymore in our household.

My current solution is a Kodi raspberry pi box, running the TVNZ/TV3 on demand apps. (no ads). Everything that the Tivo could/would have recorded is available on demand (except for prime/Choice channels etc. but thats not a train smash. Exodus app has everything anyway). The TVNZ/TV3 ondemand apps, coupled with the Aussie ondemand apps (ABC iView, Plus7, TENPlay) is more than a solution to Tivo. And getting it installed/working does not take rocket science either. Plenty of documentation available on how to do it.

I can just imagine it now how the NZ public would have reacted to this if Tivo started asking for a subscription to a freeview service. It would not have worked, too many people in NZ would have moaned about it. it makes sense for them to pull then plug, but the least they could have done is give us the tools to decrypt it.

I'm with you on that one. I've got a MagicTV recorder and we haven't used it in over a year. We watch some live TV (eg. news) but the rest is streamed as we find it so convenient.

Agreed, I just genuinely can't see the concern around recording freeview content. There's just so little on there now, and I source from elsewhere most of the time.

We still use TiVo occasionally, but I expect we really will be able to live without it.
