taking the stalking business of first myspace then facebook and twitter to a whole new level... will it take off? ...from my point of view, it won't in Serbia... not anytime soon... people here are not too keen on twitter either...

...opinions? ...I think this time they went overboard with the GPS thingie, it's just ridiculous...

Been around for ages, not sure why all the interest all of a sudden in it.

I dont like the idea of telling people when I am not at home etc.

I didn't know of it until I heard it on 3news just today... hm... I don't like that idea either... I'm just waiting for a scandal to break out just like the one when an abusive ex-husband found his ex who was hiding from him via google buzz :)

It's a "game" and companies can participate. No "stalking" although people could obviously fall on that quite quickly, but no different than using Google to search through open records of other social networks.

"Privacy" in the 21st century and with the Internet is very different from "privacy" in early 20th century. People are just not adapting fast enough.

Google Latitude does similar thing.... activate it and friends can see where you are on Google Maps. Foursquare jsut takes the social aspect a step further.

I understand the changeable nature of the term "privacy" but you must agree that there should be some boundaries set... I assume that you are well aware of the fact that common people have common sense and they'll use it in such manner- doing not so "noble" things... so, I'm sure that this not-so-new thingy is designed for one purpose but let's be honest- it will be used for a very different purpose...

...it's not that I don't agree with you, I'm just seeing the future of the painfully obvious reality... you do realize that facebook was designed for one thing and now it's used by the tweens and other no-lifers to play stupid online games such as farmville and other...

...I appreciate your opinion... I really do :) ...I'm sorry if this sounds harsh... It's just my opinion...

The only problem with that "common sense" is that people will have to learn to apply it to an network world, where "friends" takes a new meaning. They basically have to lear to select "friends".

I use the term "common sense" in a pejorative manner... and yes, I agree... but I seriously doubt that that will happen any time soon- people learning what "friend" means... I feel like the humanity will be dumbed down socially as we gain more knowledge in the science area which will result with more superior technology but also with a serious lack of contact with reality... and maybe I'm just jumping with conclusions... :)

I like the idea. http://gowalla.com/ provides a similar service that some of my friends use overseas but there is activity in NZ too.

I have just started trying both on my iPhone. Of course you should be careful what you are sharing. But other than privacy concerns, it is a great way to see what is going on around you, what people recommend, good/bad feedback... etc. Especially if you are visiting somewhere you haven't been much before!

One small problem though: people only want to be in "good" places. I just went to The Warehouse to buy a bucket. Those small things you know it's going to be cheaper there.

I tried to checkin. Nowhere there was The Warehouse to be found. People checking at the mall across the street, the restaurants next door, the supermarket which shares the car park with The Warehouse. But people don't check in at The Warehouse.

That's because some of those don't want to be "seen" there...

Very true. I don't think we'll see people checking in to lots of places... Like fish n chips, the doctor, their accountants... Or worse!!! Great for movies, resturants etc though.

I dont see what there is to just stop people checking in any damn where with it. Makes the mayor thing pretty pointless.

If there was a need to use a camera to check in some how then it wouldnt have the same cheating, not sure how you would stop people taking a shot of the location specific thing and printing it and scanning that at any time tho.

They do have some "intelligence" behind the scenes just to catch this kind of behaviour. Even a "name and shame".

I have to say that after using both Foursquare and Gowalla for a bit, I find Gowalla has more locations and is more user friendly.

It was interesting to see how people were using Foursquare at Bizzone recently (a business expo that was in Auckland last month).

There were a fair few people checking into the expo. I was at a stand and could keep an eye on which of my Twitter friends were around that I'd never met before. I'd then flick them a Twitter message to tell them to drop by and say hello.

UrgentCouriers then took it to the next level and added their own stand as a Foursquare location. That then encouraged Foursquare users to hunt them down and check-in, just to feel a part of it I guess. Ended up working quite well for them I think.
