Hi All,

I'm trying to find the following, I really don't think a decent version of it exists but I'm posting here in the hope that you can all prove me wrong.

All I want is a 2-way doorbell/Intercom with the following characteristics:

1) Wireless. I don't want cables.
2) Battery operated on both ends - see point 1 re: no cables.
3) It MUST NOT require the Internet or a Smartphone app etc. I'm not a fan of the IoT.
4) Video would be great but it's entirely optional.
5) I'd rather it didn't cost $250+, but willing to look at anything ATM.

At the moment I could just get 2 handheld CB radios and blutack one to the front door and this'd do the job! But it's a tad ugly.
Like most people, we get a lot of courier packages these days and we want to be able to say "Just upstairs, be down in 30 seconds" when a courier rings.

So far I have found this:

Chamberlain NDIS Wireless Indoor/Outdoor Portable Intercom

But it doesn't get great reviews and has to come from the US (also not sure how legal 900Mhz is here)

Anyone other suggestions? I went to Jaycar and they don't have anything fitting the bill.

Why don't you want an IoT device? The Russian hacker can answer your doorbell for you when you're not around and tell the door to door marketers to go away.

It sounds like pulling the CBs apart and replacing in a more appropriate casing might be an option?

If its couriers, then perhaps adding some extra delivery instructions?

Don't make me rage! Things like ring.com are hilarious. 1) You've got to have your Smartphone with you and charged. 2) You have to pay for "premium" bits of the service. 3) If/when ring.com go tits up, you've got an expensive bit of nothing.

This really isn't such a bad idea and might be something I do. I just thought it'd be so simple and easy to do, but it appears not.

Set up a DECT handset & remove all the buttons bar intercom? I imagine it would be more secure than CB.

Hahaha well, yes, that's true. I just thought a lot of people here have encyclopedic knowledge of such things and would know the perfect product! When I started looking I expected to have 500 options to choose from, but apparently it's a very niche requirement. I guess the IoT is what people (think they) want these.

So just an update on this in case anyone is interested.

I ordered once and it arrived about a week later. It's actually not that bad, given what it is and the price.

Both units are the same size and made of a fairly sturdy, if a bit natty, plastic. The indoor unit has a Micro USB and has to be on a charger at all times, otherwise it only last for 48 hours according to the manual. The outdoor unit takes 4 x aaa batteries.

Audio quality isn't great, if you're the person at the front door you basically have to lean right into it and yell. But that's not really important, if you're inside anything you say is quite clear to the person waiting at the door which is the main thing we wanted (the ability to say "Gimmie 1 minute I'm coming down to sign for that courier thing!")

Overall for the money it's a pretty good buy. It works as it says and isn't too ugly.

So, big thanks again @SepticSceptic for finding it, it's done the job we wanted at a fraction of the price I thought I'd have to pay.

It lists 467.6375 Mhz on the page.

Did you check the legality of that before ordering?

Isn't there a 350 dollar fine if someone had a device that isn't operating within allowable frequencies. Although it isn't easy to find info on what is actually allowed, without going through all the documents. Is there an easy to read chart or table?

Its in the FRS channels for the US, which I know of many people using those and the other US band walkie talkies here so I expect those freqs are just written off as being useless with the number here in use anyway.
