I'm usually skeptical of YouTube 'hacks'.  This one actually works and is only 3 minutes long.

Tighten the chuck on your cordless drill then turn it to the right and it will lock.

I've tried it on my B&D cordless drills, and it definitely works.

Can confirm this works on my Ozito drill. But didn't work every time and once seemed to lock the bit in that I couldn't undo with my hand and had to hold and use power to back it off.

Doesn’t work on my Hitachi. I don’t really follow the whole premise. Holding the drill in front of me with the chuck facing outward, I tighten the chuck by turning it anti-clockwise and loosen it by turning it clockwise. It tightens and releases easily and simply.

If the chuck locks when you turn it CW (as in the video) how do you unlock it - by turning it ACW? Then how do you release the bit from the chuck. Normally you’d turn the chuck CW - but with this feature, you’d just be locking it again.

Am I missing something?

Read the comments though, it's bollocks. AvE has the details:

Edited to add: AvE also has DRM cheat code for enabling this on Milwaukee drills.

So what? A useless so called hack video. Haven't these guys got a brain?

The chuck shaft locks when turned clockwise to allow tightening.

The chuck shaft locks when turning counter clockwise to allow the chuck to be loosened.

In the good old days before smart battery drills, an option to tighten and loosen a chuck (without using a key) was to give the chuck a rapid turn clockwise to tighten and a rapid turn anti-clockwise to loosen - before the motor started moving.

Yes, provided you use the correct cheat code. If all else fails, try the universal power drill cheat code up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A and then press Start.

Reading the comments on that first video, and the explanation on the second video is a sure way to let me know to NEVER WATCH ANOTHER VIDEO FROM LRN2DIY AGAIN.

Does it really work on B&D drills?

It does on mine (the 18v two speed with hammer model). It has a tendency to do two things when used under high force: the chuck loosens (especially on >8mm its), and the clutch will jump anticlockwise.

As you all know the chuck is in two pieces and to tighten it, you hold one section stationary while turning the other.  Then (this is the trick) you turn the whole chuck (not just the outer bit) in the "in".  It clicks into an obvious detent of some kind and you can non-longer adjust the chuck as you normally would.

To loosen the chuck you have to turn the whole thing in the "out" direction. It clicks out of that detent position and you can adjust as normal.  Again this is about turning the whole chuck on the shaft, not the outer section of the chuck relative to the other.

On my drill this works and eliminates those two annoying behaviors I outlined.  I can't comment on other drills.  Better quality drills probably don't need this 'feature'.

Interesting.... My Bosch drill chuck only has one piece outer sleeve for tightening or loosening...

I have always assumed that the motor back EMF generated when manually turning the chuck was detected and the chuck shaft was locked.

Maybe there are copyright issues at play with different drill manufacturers which affects the way they are designed.

I just tried a Ryobi 18v One+ drill. It has a 2-piece chuck sleeve, but turning it in either direction does nothing, except turning the motor if I twist hard enough. I don't think I've ever used a "hand tighten" (vs chuck key) drill with a ratcheting chuck like the ones shown in the videos.

It wasn't a total waste of time though. I've found in the past that the motor sometimes starts turning before I've got the chuck tightened sufficiently. While futzing with it today I accidentally pushed the forward/off/reverse button, and noticed it became much harder to turn. The trigger switch is designed to short out the motor terminals to stop the drill as soon as you release the trigger, but on this drill it only does that if the selector is not in the off position.
