eph:
I actually bought this one but your one looks cooler :). Yeah, it came with normal 3 pin plug (and speed switch) so I had to rewire to the controller.
It costs about $100 more for the "silent" model.
So you just select the speed, plug it in, and off it goes? That sounds easy, I can do that myself, don't need an electrician trying to sell me $2K worth of stuff.
Is there an easy way to suspend it from a ceiling? Like in my pictures on the first post?
Don't suppose you know where I might find a filter? My wife is complaining that it's always dusty here, that might help.

Exactly, it's got similar speed switch as your old one and you just plug it in the normal 230V socket.
Hm, not exactly sure how your one was suspended - is there some kind of hook/eye on your one (can't see on the picture, only the chain going to the ceiling)? Mine one was suspended by plastic straps going around so I've just used the same one for the new one. But you could use that plastic holder which is part of the fan and just turn it upside down and screw to piece of wood which would be suspended by your existing chain maybe?
Which filter do you need? Mine uses F7 box one - you can get it through electrical retailer again for about 100$ (or a lot cheaper if you got good account with them) or just grab it off trademe for around 60$ - there's few retailers selling OEM versions.

Not sure how it's attached actually. Suspect there's some kind of mounting hook at the top.
I don't have any kind of filter at the moment. The current fan is likely underpowered so wouldn't work well with one. So anything that is easy to attach to the 200mm duct would be good.
Ming Fans have this F7 box filter (and this similar one) on trademe, but not on their website. What's better for general home filters, F7 filter or active carbon? We don't really notice any smells at the moment, smoke or such, mostly just want to reduce dust. Wouldn't say no to carbon, but I suspect it would reduce the flow more, and cost more to replace?
I guess I can just buy this fan box and filter and attach the ducts to it pretty easily with duct tape? So $120 and I have a filter, that'd probably make my wife happy :)

G4 filters only filter particles larger than 10 microns so won't be able to filter fine dust and all those small nasties you can't see. F7/F8 is the usual you get since it removes I think down to 1 micron. HEPA is the best of course down to a lot smaller particles (0.3? or it depends on class) - you see it in vacuums - probably overkill for home unless you've got some breathing medical issues.
Yeah, the adaptor boxes are designed like that - you just slide ducting over the round end and duct tape it. Just make sure you get the right size for your ducting 150 or 200mm :).
I got one of these from AliX:
Twenty bucks posted to NZ.
It is in the living room blowing cold air through a duct to the upstairs to cool the bedrooms. Makes less noise than the heat pump.

Thanks. Looks like a cheap option, but I think I'll go with Mingfans bigger ones. Big 200mm fan, new Y junction, filter box, should cost about $550 for more power, enough control, filtering, and I can probably install it myself.
Try asking the technical guy at Simx about a suitable fan. I have found them very knowledgeable.
Last one I replaced was a simix, Manrose 150 Whisper fan, about two years ago. Not expensive and very happy with it.
The fan is plastic housing, with three pin plug and I use a wifi smart switch to control start and stop timers. Adjusted to suit the season.
A single vent outlet in centre of hallway in modest sized house, with a cheap filter sock.
:)

Thanks. They have many models with "whisper" in the name. The one I found was slightly on the low side in terms of air throughput, but good to see the options thanks.
