Thanks Timmmay, good point.  I'll do a bit more research on chainable or a series of lights ...

They don't have to be chainable, they could just be individual lights in different positions. I was just thinking that a single larger battery and a string of lights might be easy.

Thanks for your advice everyone.  I've decided on the Ryobi One+ string lights - they're on their way to me now!  :-)

They're a pretty decent unit, especially if you're already in the ONE+ ecosystem.

For anyone not already owning ONE+ kit, keep in mind the unit is sold as a skin only, and doesn't include a battery or charger.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

Thanks Stu, I had to buy the One+ charger and battery too but figure it will be worth it.  I managed to get some good deals for new genuine items on Trade Me.  Husband is also keen to have the Ryobi One+ charger and battery for and future tool purchases so it's win-win  :-)

I saw it was mentioned that many watts would be needed for proper illumination, but don’t forget that there will be ambient/indirect sunlight coming in too (well until nighttime). Tent color makes a difference too.

We have festival tents that are 40x100 ft (370sqm) and our standard lighting is 5w equivalent led lights every foot along the perimeter (every 7th is a blue led), with an additional string of 60w equivalent bulbs every 10 ft. above service area. That handles the full range of illumination ranging from daylight through after sunset.

Before we went LED it consumed A LOT of power, but they are large tents and we are fortunate to have 11KW of mains power to each tent.

Thanks Kiwi, that's useful information I can refer back to if my new string lights aren't enough.

280 feet perimeter means 280 x 5W LEDs, which is 1400W of LEDs, which is a fair bit of power / light. Add in maybe half a dozen 60W bulbs, that's 1760W of power. You're lucky you have mains power!

5w equivalent, specifically C7 candelabra bulbs, so yes, when they were incandescent they took a lot of power, but it dropped to 1/10 that when we went to LEDs (we did lose a few lumens). And the tents are also 370sqm each. If you lined a 3x3m pop up with the same bulbs you’re looking at maybe 20w? And the blues, 1 in 7, are purely for ambience (Greek festival). We’ve bounced floods off the white tent ceiling, which is another option for indirect lighting if yours is white.

Off topic, but the other benefit with going LED for us was that we pay $$ for every kW above 10 kW used in our peak 15 minute period, so we saved double as the lights were always on during the peak period for that month. All up we now have 1000ft of string lights with some 60w/40w equiv in key places - a stairway etc - so probably 5.5kW if incandescent. The electric gyro machines and portable walk-in units are now our two biggest draws.
