Continuing the garage renovation. Have spent the last couple of weeks fixing up the central steel supporting trusses. Started off a mix of 70s yellow and rust. Stripped it right back with strip discs (then did it again when it took me a couple of months to get back to it), used the black rust converter stuff and now have painted it with a high build epoxy. Looks great IMHO:

Probably over did it, since next week it is getting clad in plywood anyway!

I really hum-ed and hah-ed over the insulation. Overplanning is a problem for me at the best of times, with before I do X, I should really to Y. To do Y, it will be easier to take care of Z first. Which typically ends up with me on wikipedia researching the right ratios of copper to tin to properly cast bronze or some such.

Ultimately decided not to. The garage is if anything already too hot and it was going to be relatively spendy to do the whole thing properly. There was talk of having to cut back on the tool purchases for a while, which meant that there was only ever going to be outcome there. I did manage to hedge my bets (overplanning) by just screwing the ply up, so I tell myself I can retrofit it later if I really want it.

Just a hint for roses if there's a *next time*.... Welding gloves and the chainsaw. 

 

Our cottage has more thorns than roses.. That's what happens when you buy an old house in the country :D

 

You've inspired me - new life long dream - to prune roses with a gas welder. Thanks .The gardening gloves were too short on the arms

I help at a community centre, with community gardens, and am involved in pellet workshops (making gardens out of pallets)  , so would be at least a lurker if not a participant.

tdgeek: If you put compost on a vege garden, the type that can be planted/sowed into, would a cat still use that as a toilet? Or do I need to net it?

Compost dpoesn't stop cats. Netting does.

We have a rose bush, nit the standard variety, a bush variety. I used my hedgetrimmer (for OSH reasons) :-)  carefully tided up with secateurs later. Very carefully

There a few threads about repelling cats. Personally, I like bamboo skewers. Easy to do, low cost, and easy to remove again once you've broken the cat's habit.
