I like Mitsubishi but since our lounge one has failed for the second time in 2 years (first time installer error leaked all refrigerant out) or at least re-revise my opions of Right House in Christchurch as suitable installers.....

We had Kiwi Electrical install 3 x Fujitsu Hi Wall units, highly recommended. Get them out to measure up and advise the best size and location for you. http://www.kiwielectrical.co.nz/contact-us/

I've always had preference to Daikin. We've got a Daikin high wall in our current home.

We are in the process of building a new home and are getting a Daikin Ducted system. Going to cost around $16k.

Out of interest, which model Daikin ducted system are you having installed? (We had ours put in last year, and it had its "issues"; if it's the same or similar model, I can warn you of these!)

It's a Daikin FDYQ/RZQ160L (18kW).

9 Diffusers and 2 Return Grilles.

That's in the same series as ours, just a larger capacity. But, never fear, as the truly terrible component of the version we had installed has clearly been excised from the range - essentially, they had a variation of this range that was controlled by a touch screen (an Android tablet under a Daikin-branded cover!), as opposed to a physical standard controller. I see in the brochure this is not longer offered, which no doubt shows other people's experiences of this controller reflects our own. Trying to be too smart for their own good but it failed on so many levels, most significantly being wifi issues leading not being able to operate the heatpump (as there is no physical connection between the indoor unit and the controller) and an absence of a sensor in the controller.

The actual heatpump is great; it's just a matter of ensuring the installation is done properly (eg they put in the correct diffusers, such as downward firing ones for high ceilings - something they screwed up on ours).

Just an update. I contact 2 more places for quotes and was able to get a better deal than the $16k from our first quote. The cheapest quote we got is for $13,478 for the same system (FDYQ160) plus an extra return air grille. So 9 diffusers and 3 return air grilles. So saving around $2500 from the company we were going to go with plus an extra return grille.

Just thought I will leave some feedback on a recently installed heatpump (Fujitsu E3 model)

I got a few quotes done. Most were very similar. I have used Kiwi Electrical in the past for the lounge heatpump. They gave a very similar quote to Heat Pump Services (who I would like to comment on):

Called the guy, he seemed like a no-nonsense guy and did not muck around with anything. Gave a fair quote and went ahead with him for installation. On day of installation, the electrician was prompt and on time which is good. I wasnt happy with the positioning of the heat pump install which I did point out as well. It was installed too close to a security sensor and would essentially render it useless for a percentage of the room.

Also, the heatpump was installed very close to the corner, so if was to open the heatpump for cleaning, it is a very tight squeeze. I thought the unit would leave at least 200-300mm gap from the other wall, but there is barely 10-20mm gap.

The piping was a tidy job, except they left quite a bit of dust after drilling the hole in the wall. They did clean inside but left quite a bit of brick dust outside (and in the carport where the cabling was done). I wouldnt expect them to clean the entire thing, but it would be nice to clean the dust they created (especially inside a covered carport).

The outdoor unit is located very close to a waterdrain hole which I would have expected to be used for drainage for outdoor and indoor unit. Kim (from Heatpump Services) said the outdoor unit is going to drain with the rainwater (so it wasnt piped to the drain that was about 40cm from the outdoor unit) meaning the water is going to be flowing through the driveway.

Overall, they were on time, prompt and did a decent job. I would rate them 7/10. I had a much better experience with Kiwi Electrical (who Id give 8-8.5/10). Before anyone asks why I didnt go with them again, they were the same price point as Heat pump services and I wanted to try a new company. In hindsight, I would go with Kiwi Electrical for the same heatpump.

Yeah, I still don't quite follow your logic here: given the price point was similar between the two companies, but you had direct (and positive) experience with one of them, I'd have always chosen to go with that one.

I had a similar situation with selecting a painter for painting our house: two quotes were within $500sh of each other; I selected the one that had painted my in-laws place, based on knowing first-hand what the quality of their work was like. They also happened to be the cheapest, weirdly, but I'd have still selected them if they'd been dearer. Indeed, for many tradespeople we now don't necessarily get multiple quotes as we trust our plumber and builder for example to do a good job and to do it at an ok price.

Edit: out of interest, I thought I'd post where the value of getting a quote from multiple tradespeople does indeed pay - first quote for painting the house came in at over $25,000, while our selected painter is charging us a bit over $10,000; both are Master Painters. $25,000? - what a joke!

I know what you mean about the logic. Its pretty much like, if you dont try, you dont know. Now I have tried 2 different companies, I know which I would recommend to others.

edit: As I said, in hindsight, I would go with Kiwi Electrical mainly because the work done was not as good as I expected to be. But to some other customer, what these guys do could be considered a very good job (because they did a good job in terms of covering up the pipes and wiring back and doing a new breaker for the heatpump etc). They could have been a bit more tidier in terms of cleaning up & they could have positioned the heat pump better.

Same here.

It was a toss up between Mitsubishi and Fujitsu. I primarily went for the Fujitsu because of the cheaper (in theory) running costs (although 3 db louder on the minimum). I didn't bother with the App to control the time on/off ($200 seems a lot for an App).

Absolutely happy with the cooling, but I suspect some like it colder than others.

About to decide whether I get the same model (probably will) for the master bedroom.
