Good move. One further word of advice, if you go for a ducted/smart option, ask to have a (proper) play with the controller for it. Our gas system works really well until you hit the controllers which are monumentally stupid. Who designs a multi function system with separate zones that you can essentially only control one function and zone at a time? I wander around the house several times a day pushing buttons and flicking switches...

I really wish that independent heating consultants existed as a service. Most suppliers are good, but they really want to sell you their product. The Sustainability Trust in Wellington is better than most, but really focussed (IME) more on insulation than heating.

Just from a usability perspective? Wondering how you could have a play with the system before it was installed?

Varcoe have suggested (based on the fireplace and its heat output + heat transfer) that a ducted system around $14k is overkill. All they have suggested is a unit that sits in the lounge/kitchen that faces down the hall will be good enough to provide heat when required if fireplace isn't used.

The other crowd have suggested the same set up.

However, one is Mitsi (KJ60), one is Panasonic.

Comparing the specs, looks like the Panasonic is better? (Despite 1kwh lower output):

More efficient, but with lower overall output. Not much anyone can say that isn't covered by the table and that you already know. I'd go for bigger capacity vs efficiency but that's me.

There's $1k difference between the two. However, looking at Albany Heatpumps online they're $600 cheaper based on standard install. I wonder about asking EES who's quoted for the Panasonic how much the mitsi unit will be from them as a comparison.

Question would be is 1.2kwh more on heating worth it? If the price difference is $400ish that is probably just worth going for the mitsi on reliability alone...(from what I've read on this forum)

Yeah I can't comment on the reliability side of things. As for the $400 difference, that would come down to total cost as a percentage increase to determine value. If it's a 10% increase in cost for a 20% increase in heat capacity for example, i'd see that as good value.
