I used to live in Newlands. I typed in my old address here https://www.electrickiwi.co.nz/pricing and it says 18c + GST, not inc.

Here in Kapiti its 21c + GST.

Still wondering if Flick is going to be worth it. Anyone else here in Kapiti? - if so, what prices are you seeing on & off peak?

Is that friend also on a low user plan, or are they on standard user? As standard user has lower unit charges but higher fixed charges.

Also have a look at the Orion network price schedule They have a capacity charge and a peak / offpeak charging tariff structure, but no fixed fees. While Vector instead charge a fixed fee and a per unit surcharge. Problem is that the silly low user regulations mean that it is virtually impossible for power companies to offer retail pricing plans that feature capacity based charges. If they were to do so, it would be possible for end customers to structure their power usage in a way that would cause the retailer to break the law.

Short answer - silly laws + EK deciding to roll the peak and offpeak and capacity costs into a flat rate + extra costs due to the earthquakes, Is the reason why power is expensive in Christchurch.

As for Flick pricing in Christchurch, they have peak, shoulder, and offpeak pricing. If you can move most of your usage to offpeak and weekends, Flick will probably be cheaper. But Flick are still mucking around with the Orion pricing, instead of passing it through directly.

Also the EK website says that they are offering 25.67c / unit for low user in Christchurch. (I just typed random addresses into the EK website until it gave me suggestions for Christchurch). So at least ring EK and ask to be moved to the lower price.

I got a call from Flick yesterday, offering customers who left before the winter spike a $75 credit if they come back.

How have prices been the past month or so? What are people in Wellington effectively paying per kwh, ignoring daily charges? Can anyone tell me what say what they paid the past month for how many kwh?

On EK, taking into account hour of power savings, I'm effectively paying 15.0c/kwh, and prices are static. EK's daily charge is slightly lower.

Im not happy with this - I stayed with Flick through the price spikes. So it is annoying to hear that people who switched and who then change back are being rewarded for not being loyal. For the record, Im not annoyed with anyone who switched away, and who has been given that offer. Im only annoyed at Flick themselves.

Time for me to do another pricing review. But it is difficult for me, as I always fall in the usage hole of low user being better during summer, and standard user being better during winter.

Not happy here either.

I don't expect a reward for staying, but rewarding people for leaving is bull crap, and I've sent them a complaint saying so.

For others here, ChCh is Low User 27 and 34 and Normal user 25 and 84(all these numbers include GST)

BUT, my free hour of power is a significant discount. The last 12 days Ive used 119 kW and of that 20kW was free, an 18.4% "discount" on the usage charges, making my 23c to be 18.76c

Switched to EK during that time as well so I'm envious =)

Anyway with free power we're down to around 22c

Almost 40+% free for us (gas hot water heating).

I get 27c incl GST at me neighbours address, Halswell. 25.67 that @aredwood advised is also including GST

Now, I typed in a few addresses in ChCh and I get different results. Why is EK charging different rates in different parts of urban ChCh? Isn't it all Orion here?

I had Contact at my door a week ago offering a deal with 26% off their rates for two years on a fixed price deal with $150 credit loaded on the account. I was tempted by the deal but stuck with Flick. The maths was that Contact would be about $1 a week more most of the year, but maybe $10 a week less during last winter. I guessed that overall they'd be roughly on par.... but with $150 buffer to then swing it towards Contact being cheaper.

I chose not to take the deal in the end, because my conscience likes the fact that with Flick, shifting my usage to save me money, typically aligns with less polluting times. And conversely particularly during most major price spikes when more polluting sources are turned on, me choosing to save money by turning everything off, is contributing a small way to reducing the load.

Normally, fancy accounting and complicated special deals insulate us from the true costs of our actions (both financial and environmental), and therefore it is rare to find something so simple as Flick. I might be paying more, but there is something reassuring about it.

From EK web site. FAQs on pricing page.

"When you sign up to Electric Kiwi, we search the Electricity Authority's nationwide database to determine what set up you have. You'll automatically be allocated the best rates we have for this set up, which will mean your rates will be lower if you have controlled supply."

Controlled supply means the lines company can turn your hot water power on and off to regulate load on their lines.

This may account for differences in pricing.

We use LPG water heating so I guess lines company can’t turn ours off and on. So we must be charged lower then?

We do have controlled supply, that'll be the difference.
