Another Wellingtonian here - we are in hataitai currently and paying 18c/kwh incl GST too. I am trying to compare that pricing with Flick at present to see if it's worth going back to them over the summer months. Given that rate and the $1.88/day connection charge (and the 'hour of power' which translates to about 10% savings for us, in a way) is there a way to check Flick's historical rates (spot price, their margin, daily fees etc)?

You guys have it sweet at that price! I wouldnt be leaving EK if thats what they offered here in Pram.

After 3 weeks Flick have finally figured things out and have advised I should be connected within 10 days.

I have done this exercise - it took a while...

You can download historical half hourly price data from your local supply node from the net I think it’s on the WITS website.

Then you can add the flick margin and fees to these rates to work out equivalent per unit rates.

I also downloaded all of my Powershop half hourly usage data and used this to work out comparative costs for a 12 month period from PS, EK and Flick. FWIW, Flick was about 8% cheaper than EK, taking into account the hour of power, but YMMV as every situation is obviously different.

I told Flick I was going to stay with EK, even with the $75 credit. When I'm on Flick I spend too much time trying to get the best price, which is just annoying for myself and my wife. I'm happier with a constant reasonable price and a free hour.

We're paying 19c/kwh inc gst in Wellington, have controlled as well

I feel cheated out of the 1c savings the rest of you are getting :|

I don't expect a reward for staying, but rewarding people for leaving is bull crap, and I've sent them a complaint saying so.

Hey Andrew, we contacted a select group of ex-customers who we know could do really well if they were to come back to Flick. it's not a reward for leaving Flick, just a reminder that Flick was working for them and can continue to do so. We do try to give back to our customers where we can, such as giveaways on social media and our 'Nominate a friend' campaign where we asked Flick customers to nominate a fellow Flickster who could use an extra boost during Dry Winter. All those nominated ended up with a credit.
I'd love to have a chat to you if you'd like to PM me.
Also if you know of anyone who hasn't Flicked over yet, we're currently rolling out a friend get friend offer to customers; $50 for every friend that joins with your email address in the promo code field.

I sent them a PM, and they said that they will be doing trials for Solar soon. And they asked if I was still interested. (I think they are trying to distract me). Replied asking about pricing - especially if they will pay for exported power, but no response.

It still seems a bit off from a marketing point of view. As assuming you are on a standard user plan, and you use 8000 units per year - Flick will earn $266 per year in revenue from you. (sum of their daily and per unit service fees) So it will take approx 3.5 months to recoup the $75 - and that is not even allowing for any overheads. Which of course there will be internal overheads as well. Im guessing also that there wasn't any fixed term requirement either to take up the offer. Unless they were only making the offer to really high users. What is your approx usage @timmmay ? (all good if you would rather not say online)

At least if you are in Wellington - you have the option of switching to Paua to the People instead. Same pricing model as Flick but cheaper service fees and email only support. (Guess that they are the Bigpipe equivalent of electricity retail).

I asked if they could do a price comparison based on my most recent EK bill, as that's got to be easier than doing the calculation myself! She said that wouldn't take long, but I've still not heard back; I'm not yet convinced that Flick will be much cheaper than what I'm currently paying with EK, so am interested to see the results.

@Arewood: I'm far from a high user (benefit from being on low user for probably 10+ months a year, as have gas hot water) and Flick contacted me to return to the fold, so yeah they're not necessarily going to get great returns from our return! Possibly more about shoring up numbers?

Got a call back yesterday, and they claim that I'd have saved about $5 off a $25 bill, which I guess as a percentage is meaningful; of course, there's no assurance these (or better ) savings will continue, though they are claiming rates are expected to drop even further over the next few months.

Like timmmay, I'm not 100% convinced I want to go back to the hassles of watching and adjusting usage based on the current price, but I guess this is far less of a concern over the warmer months. May give it a second chance, as I can always move away again if I determine for sure the model's not for me.

That said, totally agree it's not a great look from the company, offering enticements to those of us who left but ignoring those who had the guts to stick it out...

Other than maintenance events, weird spikes, storms. Those tend to even out over the year though.

Yep, and as I mentioned before - I'm currently doing -5-10% (minus 5% to minus 10%, losses) compared to my former genesis plan. Yet the flick still happily reports the 3%-5% savings.

I've been noticing the per unit prices have still been a bit 'up there' as well. Belmont, Lower Hutt (haywards substation I believe?).

Averaging close to 25c even over the past week which has been relatively warm by comparison. Lowest price I've had any time recently has only been 15c/kw.

Edit: Power save switching is a 9 day averaged figure. If it drops below average dehumidifier etc switches on.

Can anyone in the know explain why prices have been so darned high the last few weeks? I'm assuming routine maintenance is being conducted? I noticed several days without any transfer on the HVDC during which the NI was sitting around the mid 70's and the SI was sitting around the 140's... Power this last weekend didn't see to get any lower than 17cents and routinely sat above 24cents.

There was hvdc scheduled maintenance the weekend just finished so assume more exprensive power sources are getting used (Huntley mainly?)

The two weeks still Wednesday last week saw HLY5 on outage so there was reduced generation and given the dry sequence with South Island Hydro lakes falling prices have inched up.

Upon the return of HLY5, Pole 2 went out of service until last night with Pole 3 (and HVDC capability entirely) being out of service between Saturday and Sunday.

TCC (the other big thermal unit in the North Island) is on outage until around 8 December - you may see it start up if prices continue to be high with low / minimal inflows.
