It's a bit unfair to compare sky recorded to on demand as you where fully capable of watching the recording anytime, you just chose to allow your family to watch something instead.

How much data did you use on the tablet? Would have been a fairly large amount!

Well in the past when I tried iSky on demand the quality was poor on my PC unless you watched it in a little window. The PLP stream is much improved over that. I'm not a Sky subscriber to sports anymore so I can't compare today to see if Sky have improved or not. So it is perhaps a bit unfair I'll concede and not a scientific test.

Don't know for sure how much I used data wise as it is a company sim. I watched ~ an hour's worth on mobile so logic suggests (1,600Kbps x 60 secs x 60 mins) = 5,760,000bits/8 = 720KB. The company pools all their data plans amongst some 600 mobiles. I'm hoping my usage stays under the radar.

Intriguing.

Certainly it would make more sense to make one app for all Freeview devices rather than just an app for Samsung TV's, LG TV's etc.

Guess it depends how much expertise they have in that area. NeuLion are well known for developing apps for different devices.

good idea in theory, but whether PLP would be able to persuade Neulion to develop this kind of technology which will only really work in NZ.

PLP would probably have to stump up all the development funds to create it from scratch, whereas all the other apps (iphone, android etc) would mostly just be re-skinning the apps that Neulion have already developed

TBH, from my selfish point of view, since I have a Sammy smart TV, I don't care how they do it, as long as they do it soon!!

Having said that, the MHEG5 option seems to be the best option if it covers the widest range of devices.

I think you missed the point...

I have small people in the house, too and was never able to watch footy if the kids had their rubbish on the telly as we only have one decoder in the house.
iSky was unusable on anything that's not flash-compatible and even on my Mac was choppy and pixellated, so I can completely see how this is a massive step up, if you didn't have the HD ticket.

For those that sday that the numbers of people who had access to high quality footage of football through Sky...did anyone saying that ever watch it on a non-MySky decoder?
Some games were markedly worse than the PLP footage that i have watched thus far.

I, for one, am not unhappy. Just would've preferred a monthly payment option.

As I've said before, the problem is nobody did. If domestic broadcasters and content providers already had this technology at their fingertips then it is they whom we should be complaining to - not PLP who have made an investment into the local market to offer an alternative.

Let's be honest, as things were we were never going to be able to see all matches live with Sky. Hopefully someone from PLP is reading this forum and SBiddle's blog and actually have the intention to keep improving the service.

The next question would be how many people with Freeview certified/Smart TV's and STBs actually have them connected to the internet. Based on the people I know - I suspect very few.

I'm not familiar with Apple's approval process but does it normally take this long to get an app approved and into the App Store?

It does - normally ~10 days but can take up to a month for an app to get approved if a problem is found

I did, and still do. Just the other day I watched the Rugby Championship live on iSky while I was on a Skype call for work. Granted the quality wasn't perfect, but, it was my choice to stream it on iSky. If I wanted to watch it in HD, I'd head out to the lounge and watch it on TV. Don't want to sound like a broken record, but with PLP, I don't have that choice.

The irony that people would prefer EPL on another pay platform than PLP isn't lost on me. Hoping it will fold and return to the Death star of broadcasting would be a disservice to broadcasting of sports in general, but that is just my opinion, and I am biased as do not have Sky as we see $800 per year as too much. But never been comfortable with one provider locking up swathes of content.

The argument Sky gave was that EPL viewing rates were lower than a Phoenix game, owing to the time they were played. What I don't know however is if this was just live viewing. If was live viewing only, I expect a large number of Sky subbers would Mysky and watch first thing in the morning. I would expect the top flight teams to get their games watched much more than the Nix when totalling views via live or mysky...

Peoples parents are having trouble with PLP on HTPC or logins for computers, getting it on their tv, mine have trouble with their Sky... change takes learning.. Definitely not as convenient as just a remote, but this will come in the next few years probably.

I know of the 48% reach stats for Sky, but you are at the vagaries of that business, and their choices at a whim. You can get interesting stats from their annual report, including 'churn' rates, which are subscribers in and out. Nothing but a number to them!

However, feel pretty bad for those who don't feel they have value with the lack of quality for the price. And good for those of you who get to watch the footage you usually never see. As said many times if not happy, all you can do is complain, then vote with your feet.

I think it's the tip of the iceberg, I think more sports will go this route in order to guarantee the biggest revenue, with new providers or the sports themselves coming in to produce (Sky produce a lot of content) and distribute it directly to fans. Pay per game view or per season I think will become more common, with the clubs/teams getting a share of the profit from sales of the footage for their game, perhaps even after the fact, rather than a share of total rights revenue at the start of the season as happens today. Season makes more sense to the provider though as they lock you in, and don't have droves cancelling or stopping monthly subs when their teams drop out from the end of season playoffs for example.

I'm not saying it is optimal, just that it seems the writing is on the wall as sports try to leverage their product. We all know the Kathmandhu model, retail something that you produce wholesale for a bigger slice of the pie, even on sale you are making margin. It's a natural progression for the sports bodies to broadcast themselves. Although a big risk, as they may not be worth what they have been getting from the broadcasters..

Just imagine my kids juggling connections and passwords for 5 or 6 sports portals, dad buy this game or that game, ugh!
