The common denominator couldn't be the currency of the Card you pay with, could it?

I pay with a NZ Westpac Direct Debit Visa Card, maybe I should change to AirNZ US currency smartcard?

Given mine is paid through a US iTunes account (funded by a AirNZ OneSmart) - so no direct contact with any credit card, I'm not sure how.

steve2222:
dclegg:
trig42: Strange, it must only be some telecom customers.

I was not aware of the issues, and watched a few episodes of HoC yesterday. Buffered fast, menus loaded fast.

Netflix US
AppleTV
Telecom ADSL2
UnoTelly DNS in ATV settings only (nothing changed on router).

I have exactly the same config as you, but Netflix US is effectively dead in the water for us. If only we could nail what the actual difference is between our configurations, we may go some way to discovering why it isn't working for all users. Do we need to dig deeper and discuss the actual hardware we're all using to see if there is any correlation there? FWIW, we have a Draytek Vigor 120 modem, and Apple Airport Extreme (5th gen)

Good idea.

I am with Telecom and have had no issues with NF USA.

Telecom ADSL2+ 150Gb plan
UnoTelly (the plan that does not have VPN)
My router is the standard Telecom issue Thompson (sorry don't have model number at work)
No changes to router, only put UnoTelly settings into each device.

What devices work: laptops, iPhone 4s, iPad 3 gen, Sony BR player that has NF app.

And in case this has some impact: I pay with an Entropay virtual credit card.

I'm Telecom VDSL and all my devices are also working perfectly fine for Netflix US.  However I have a static IP that doesn't go via the transparent proxy - maybe you have a similar IP?

Thanks, but I'll keep looking at comparisons with steve2222 as he is also telecom adsl.  The only thing I haven't tried if changing DNS direct on devices...mine are set on the router.

Not sure if this helps, but I am using a friend's Netflix account with my own profile.  It is paid for on her NZ Visa card.  She is having no issues but I can't access US Netflix content.

Has anyone been able to keep track of the variables that are being tested/ruled out?  Or the configurations of those that aren't currently affected? Potentially seeing this in one place may help see a trend that will lead to an answer???

To get a little more geeky - it might be better to look at some wireshark traces of working and non working configurations/providers it would be particularly interesting to see if the same CDN servers were in play and also whether there are any unusual port 53 (DNS) packets etc.

Ideally we could keep this as consistent as possible - eg ensure that only one device (eg an Apple TV 3) is used is all tests, with nothing else on the LAN or WiFi, probably using Ethernet as it's moderately easier to sniff consistently but does require a monitored port on a switch or a genuine old school hub - or possibly with the capture PC configured as the gateway.

Doing this will give a much better comparative test - even though it needs a little bit more geek power to set up.

Unfortunately I won't be able to text mine tonight as I will be working until the early hours - but there should be enough IT pros here to do a few checks?

no, maybe we need a google docs spreadsheet with all the variables...if nothing else we can pass it to unblockus, getflix and unotelly to help them.

Latest post from unblock-us..... however playmo with the DNS of 213.5.182.117 appears to have fixed our issues here, even have HD streaming back. Will test it as we have a 7 day trial.... if all is well switching time.

http://support.unblock-us.com/customer/portal/articles/1565662-us-canada-netflix-affecting-our-new-zealand-customers

**Update**

Our Tech Team have been busy carrying out extensive testing on this Netflix US/Canada issue affecting New Zealand customers on some ISP's.

From these tests it has been concluded that it looks like these ISP's or their upstream providers have implemented traffic shaping, specifically to US based CDN's.

Because of this it will currently not be possible to stream US/Canadian Netflix.

For the time being, all other regions of Netflix are still available in Europe and South/Central America.

We will continue to investigate if there is any way to get around this issue.

Obviously content providers and ISPs think people should torrent instead of paying for content...

If that is the cause, then I suspect we won't get a lot of help from our ISPs. Especially if we belong to one who will be bringing in their own streaming video service in future. :-(

However, it doesn't really explain why Playmo DNS would work. And doesn't fill me with any confidence that it would be worthwhile jumping to them (especially considering we paid 12 months in advance with UnoTelly to get the cheaper rate, and still have 6 months remaining on that).

Not sure if anyone saw this update on unblock us support page. I don't know enough about this sort of thing to know if this is correct or not but I also thought some people were having issues streaming uk Netflix as well. Is it strange that different ISPs would starting doing this all at the same time?

Yes, thats the most frustrating thing, but is a point I've been trying to avoid in order to keep this thread ontopic. But considering you brought it up...

I find it hard to fathom that content providers can't come up with a business model that would allow them to offer NetFlix style content globally and with a consistent catalogue. Their current way of doing business is driving people to illegal options. And while what we're currently doing with NetFlix isn't illegal, it is against the T&C for that service.

I am yet to hear one convincing argument that doesn't ultimately boil down to "This is the way it has to be done because this is the way its always been done".

Yes and why some on Telecom can get on but most can't.
