Here is the release:

Spark Sport and TVNZ have Rugby World Cup 2019 covered, at home and in Japan, delivering 48 games streamed live and on demand on Spark Sport and twelve games free-to-air on TVNZ 1, comprehensive supporting analysis, and in-depth news coverage - on and off the field.

Head of Spark Sport, Jeff Latch says Spark Sport is excited to bring a fresh take on the Rugby World Cup to New Zealand.

“We’ve designed a line-up of presenters and commentators and a range of programming that aims to bring some new thinking to the coverage, while still maintaining the essentials that rugby fans know and love. The talent that we’ve recruited demonstrates that – there are some well-loved names in there, but also some exciting newer talent.

“We’re confident that rugby fans will be impressed by the huge range of content that we’re creating to support what’s shaping up to be an incredibly exciting tournament.”

TVNZ’s GM Sport & Events Melodie Robinson says TVNZ is proud to be the free-to-air partner of Rugby World Cup 2019.

“At TVNZ we talk a lot about delivering the moments that matter to New Zealanders. We see quality sports content, particularly Rugby World Cup 2019, as a key opportunity to do just that.”

“But it won’t be quite like the previous four Rugby World Cups I’ve worked on. What’s different about this one is that we’ve brought in software technology, combined with TVNZ’s Augmented Reality capabilities, that will allow us to analyse rugby to a level that hasn’t been seen in this country before.

“Add to that we’ll be balancing the rugby conversation and former players by sprinkling through entertainment stars that you wouldn’t usually see on a rugby broadcast.

“We think it’s an exciting combination that will bring Kiwis all the exhilaration of Rugby World Cup 2019 in Tokyo into living rooms around the country.”

Commentary Team for Rugby World Cup 2019 on Spark Sport and TVNZ

Scotty Stevenson will lead the commentary team. World Cup winning cult hero, Stephen Donald joins him in Japan for his first All Blacks commentating role after finishing the Super Rugby season.

Scotty and Stephen will be joined from the side-line by a double act of TVNZ’s Kimberlee Downs together with other well-known rugby voices throughout the tournament. These include former All Blacks’ Conrad Smith (from Quarter Finals on), 133 test capped All Black Keven Mealamu, four-time Rugby World Cup participant (and two-time winner), Sir Graham Henry and Tamati Ellison.

All New Zealand matches and other key matches will have Kiwi commentary team; other matches will take the World Feed, featuring a host of well known and loved commentators from around the world.

Pre/Post Match Analysis on Spark Sport and TVNZ

Back in Auckland at TVNZ, the studio team will deliver pre and post-match analysis, with in-depth post-game debate. Studio discussions and game footage will be wrapped into a weekly 1.5-hour highlights package. The studio team includes:

  • James Gemmell – UK based, Kiwi ex-pat Gemmell is returning home from his regular Sky UK hosting duties to anchor the studio team.
  • Isa Nacewa – a Super Rugby stalwart with the Blues and a legend with Irish club Leinster, Nacewa will add his in-depth knowledge of European rugby to the mix
  • 24-year-old All Black, Damian McKenzie, who will bring his unique perspective as a current player.
  • Kristina Sue – New Zealand representative in touch, sevens, rugby league and a 2017 Rugby World Cup winner with the Black Ferns, Sue adds her authority to the studio team.
  • Jon Preston – former All Black, coach and part time broadcaster, Preston rounds out the team with help from Libero, a state-of-the-art augmented reality analysis tool.
  • And keep an eye out for Anika Moa, who will bring her style to interviews with the All Blacks – no rugby clichés allowed, but plenty of banter and music expected.

Yeah, aside from Moa, its not a bad lineup, plus they have some hi tech stuff going on as well for analysis

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/rugby-world-cup/114859172/sparktvnz-unveils-sir-graham-henry-as-part-of-star-lineup-for-rugby-world-cup

Spark/TVNZ has also pulled off something of a coup in recruiting James Gemmell, the highly regarded Kiwi presenter who has carved out a career for Sky in the UK, to front their pre- and post-game studio coverage from Auckland.

Gemmell will be joined in studio by Isa Nacewa, Black Ferns world champion Kristina Sue and former All Black Jon Preston, who will provide analysis via what Spark/TVNZ promises will be a "state-of-the-art augmented reality analysis tool".

I have heard Graham Henry speak on multiple occasions. No doubt his pedegree etc, but his ability to convey technical concepts or to impart analysis is pretty average in my experience. I hope he can improve, otherwise expect lots of sporting cliches :)

It will be interesting to see what they do the augmented reality. James Gemmell is indeed a coup.

I like Anika :) Always nice to have a different view point to lighten the mood.

The release also says they will have a range of different voices

My favorite one is Nigel Yalden but he is in radio which is very sad, TV is the best place for him.

Well the Spark Sport price for the RWC in NZ is pretty good value, the NBC in the USA have just announced the pricing over there for streaming/on demand for the cup. Around $315 NZ for the basic pacakge, $475 NZ for the all access package and $49 NZ for individual games.

"'Terrible' NZ Internet prompts concerns over how to watch All Blacks at World Cup".

Dear $deity. Read this and you might think we have millions of people living in farms ("“Most of New Zealand is a pretty rural farming country, so this is a pretty strange decision,” said Connors. “Some people just won’t be able to watch, there are no contingencies in place.")

Also, it seems some people think will come to New Zealand by mistake, instead of going to Japan ("“It should absolutely be on free-to-air channels – it’s the country’s national sport. The government should be sticking some money into letting us watch rugby. I am sure it is bringing in a lot of money through tourists and what not.")

Anyway:

A spokesperson for Spark said government initiatives and investment would see 100% of New Zealanders able to access reliable internet by the end of 2020, and in the interim it had signed a deal with free-to-air TVNZ for the All Blacks pool games to play with a one-hour delay, and the semi-final and final – if Steve Hansen’s side feature – to air live and free.

“There is a small minority who may not be able to stream it – and that many of these people live rural areas and are passionate rugby fans,” said a Spark spokesperson.

“The Rugby World Cup is a highly anticipated event on every rugby fan’s calendar. Ensuring pubs who want to show the Rugby World Cup at their premises can stay open for the matches will mean more rugby all round – which we see as a good thing for New Zealanders.”

But [ Mike Connors, CEO of the West Coast Rugby Union Club] said the new streaming arrangement had not been tested and Spark had a poor track record of delivering for rural Kiwis.

“Can Spark deliver? That’s the big question at the moment. Everyone is concerned. They’re striking a lot of problems. This is the first time they’ve done it – that’s a hell of a gamble.”

Spark did the right thing in giving the commercial rights to Sky to Simu broadcast ensuring that so long as Kiwi's can get to a bar, pub, hotel, or other commercial location with Sky, who have subscribed, or have a semi reasonable internet connection, or a TV, then they shouldn't miss an AB's game. Without the commercial rights to Sky, I think many many more would have.

Just received:

Spark Sport to stream Japan vs South Africa rugby clash on September 6

With just weeks to go until Rugby World Cup 2019™, Spark Sport has announced it will exclusively stream the warm-up test match between Japan and South Africa.

Set to take place on Friday, September 6 at 10:15pm (NZT), the test between tournament hosts Japan and one of the world cup favourites, South Africa, is the perfect opportunity for Tournament Pass holders to get familiar with streaming live sport using their Spark Sport app ahead of Rugby World Cup 2019™.

Head of Spark Sport, Jeff Latch, says Spark Sport wants to make sure that New Zealanders are match fit and ready to stream Rugby World Cup 2019™.

“Spark Sport is bringing Kiwis more Rugby World Cup™ content than ever before and we’re confident that rugby fans will be impressed by the huge range of live and on demand games, analysis and interviews that support what’s shaping up to be an incredibly exciting tournament. But we want people to get in early and make sure they are all set up and familiar with the app before kick-off on September 20, so nothing gets in the way of a great viewing experience,” says Latch.

The clash between Japan and South Africa at Kumagaya rugby stadium is the first time the South Africans have played in Japan and is just the second time the two teams have met, following the historic upset at the Rugby World Cup 2015™ match in Brighton, where tournament underdogs, Japan beat a more experienced, South Africa.

The match inspired the movie, ‘The Brighton Miracle’ (starring Kiwis Temuera Morrison and Sam Neill) which will be released soon. Rugby World Cup 2019™ Tournament Pass holders can relive the magic of the nail-biting clash which is available to stream on demand on Spark Sport.

The Japan vs South Africa test on September 6 will be streamed live and on demand on Spark Sport and will be available only to Rugby World Cup 2019™ Tournament Pass holders.

Most bars will probably be showing Sky rather than Spark Sport streaming

All the bars I am aware of are taking advantage of the Sky Commercial offering of the RWC on Sky.

All the bars I am aware of are taking advantage of the Sky Commercial offering of the RWC on Sky.

Hopefully the bars that have upgraded or modified their system and have purchased Spark's streamed feed, do actually try and use it, so they and Spark can guage real world usage for a premiere event.

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.
