Not sure if it will help but there seems to be a big difference in performance between Kodi 17 and 16 . I ended up going back to 16.1 because of the slow streaming on Rasp pi and Windows devices . Now all streams start in a couple of seconds rather than 10-15 .

I have been wondering about that. I am about to try installing version 16 to see what difference it makes. A problem I have had is I don't know enough about Kodi yet so it is hard to diagnose things that don't work as expected. I started out with the most recent version (Krypton) on the assumption that would be best, but while researching my issues I have seen a lot of comments about problems with buffering and the like. This may just be specific to 17 on anything other than fibre. I don't know.

Something interesting... I use @Apsattv list on my Amazon Fire TV. The playback is sometimes bad - with pauses every 30 seconds or so. I thought it would be something on the ATV because the connection is ethernet, 1Gpbs/1Gbps fibre.

Got a new Sony A1 TV to test - stunning kit! - and when I tried Freeview On-Demand from the guide it had the same problems. So not the device but either my connection or the servers.

Anyone else seeing this?

I downloaded the free version of Perfect Player onto my 2nd gen FTV box with the Apsattv list and it seems to work fine, no probs (well it did about a week ago the last time I tried).

I am totally frustrated by this. I just seem to keep going in circles. I tried installing 16.1 to see if it would make any difference. It actually seems to have made them worse. On iPlayer I get almost immediate pixellation, followed by freezing, loss of audio, jerkiness, the whole pile of crap. Speed test consistently 20 - 25 mbps. I can't get TV to work at all, so nothing local. At least that worked under Krypton.

I don't understand what I'm missing here. Everyone else in the world loves Kodi. For me it is just an exercise in pure frustration. I can't get it to do anything as far as streaming goes, which is what I actually want it for. It would help if I understood more about the technical aspects, but I'm not a complete newbie and I cannot get it to work at all. Zilch. Absolutely nothing. What a total waste of my time.

Still trying to make sense of this. I am testing on a Windows 8 mini-pc. The default BBC browser stream works perfectly. I am using Chrome and picture and sound are fine on live stream news (not HD). My speed meter shows download speeds under 3 mbps, around 1.6 – 2 mbps on average.

I was looking at settings on the Kodi iPlayer app and did some experimenting. I found a tab for streams and ticked a box that says do not use http streams just to see what it would do. This pops up a window with different stream providers at different bitrates when I click on the live stream. The providers are Akamai and Limelight. The slowest speeds offered are 1.0 Mbps but even when I choose this I still get the problems with buffering, freezing and dropped audio, though they seem a little less severe. I don’t really understand the significance of any of this.

Is there anyone successfully using Kodi for streaming on an RBI connection at around 20 Mbps? There must be something in this that is causing my issues.

Learning as I go. I'm finally making some progress on this, but I still don't understand the issues. I used the settings in the iPlayer app to reduce the live bitrate setting to its absolute minimum of 1.0 Mbps. That finally seems to have done the trick. I am now getting smooth streaming with no hiccoughs. If I increase it even to 1.8 Mbps, though, I start getting buffering, though no freezing or loss of audio. Can anyone explain this to me? Why does the setting have to be so idiotically low? My download speeds are way above that.

I'm not seeing any issues with kodi 17 / OSMC on my rasp pi 2. Streams usually start within a few seconds . . . and I'm stuck on a slowish adsl 2 connection.

Thanks for the info. I am very perplexed by this. I don't even know where to look. Everything but Kodi streams normally. The problem with Kodi extends across different versions on different systems. The only common factor seems to be my Internet connection.

Just found this on a Kodi forum. It might explain what is happening. I have noticed that my RBI speed is often all over the place, even though average speed is high. I also often notice changes in picture quality as adaptive streaming kicks in. These don't usually last long, just a brief blurring or pixelation. The point being that my connection speed constantly changes. With adaptive streaming (as with iPlayer) this doesn't get in the way. But according to the below text, Kodi doesn't do adaptive streaming so if there is a brief drop in connection speed maybe that is enough to stuff it up:

If Kodi is just buffering occasionally, it might simply run out of buffer for a moment. Instead of using a different bitrate, it might be sufficient to increase the size of your buffer. For more information on buffers in Kodi, please see the Kodi wiki: HOW-TO:Modify the video cache.

On a side note: The best option to avoid buffering would be if Kodi could switch between different streams/bitrates on the fly. This is the way the official iPlayer works. Unfortunately, this functionality is not available for HLS streams and not yet perfect for DASH streams in Kodi.

Does it have a firewall enabled? try turning it off? also try to see if there is a firmware update available.

From what you have found, it would seem that setting a much larger buffer would possibly be the solution to getting around the issue. Would require a bit of tuning I expect though to hit the sweet spot.

The thing that is difficult with internet connections, is never knowing where each source comes from and how it gets to you. There must be differences between ISPs in how they route traffic. Possibly it even differs depending on where you are in their network and on what sort of connection you have.
