I'm not sure about it being generational as such, I just think it's a matter of how media is presented to you.

I got my first TiVo in the UK in 2000 and it changed the way I watched TV for good. It's by no means the best DVR, but the thing I love about the TiVo is the suggestions to help me discover programmes that are broadcast when I am not watching TV or never knew existed, and I think this along with instant access is very much what is needed for TV in the future.

The linear nature of traditional TV is definitely outdated, but the advantage for many people is that the programmes are presented to them. They can plonk themselves in front of the TV and not have to decide on a particular programme they'd like to watch, they just channel hop and find something or dive into the library of the DVR and pick a programme they've requested it to record.

I'm all for getting rid of linear broadcast TV via aerial/cable/satellite and moving to TV over Internet, as long as the quality is good, but really think that there needs to be more thought of how to present programmes to the casual viewer who just wants to sit down and not search for a particular programme to watch.

YouTube is doing this very well with subscriptions but you still need to search for subjects of interest and in general the content is more of the nature of vlogs than it is traditional programming. Netflix and Lightbox etc are great, but again you need to find the programme you want to watch, and then of course you just watch the whole series in one go in a linear fashion! I quite enjoy having a quiz show on at times but I'd never actually select this kind of programme via Netflix if I had to make a decision to search for something to watch.

A mix of these services would be great. To have more traditional TV content but presented in a more YouTube kind of way seems like it would be a winner to me.

Something that should have been thought of before launching it. Same for move to whatever replaces DVB-T2 - perhaps it will just end up being some form of LTE or who knows. Lets just hope DVB-T isnt allowed to hang on wasting spectrum for as long as analog was.

A stream of the live broadcast side by side on demand options is a perfect solution, but the networks need to get their services on a lot more devices - a la Netflix. Sky news did this on the Apple TV. You can watch a live stream of the current revolving news broadcast or access on demand content from inside their app. Works really well.

This is why I'm interested to see how the networks treat the new Apple TV. I know there are better/cheaper/different set-top boxes etc around (and I don't want to go down that track) but nothing beats a major player such as Apple who is known for a solid user experience starting the ball rolling. We saw it with cell phones, music etc...

I'll be interested to see how NZ companies, as well as world wide networks move.

The Nine Network today announced the launch of a fourth free-to-air channel and outlined plans to start live streaming all four channels in 2016.

Debuting on November 26, 9Life will feature lifestyle and reality content sourced mostly from the Scripps Network whose brands include HGTV, DIY Network, Food Network, Cooking Channel and Travel Channel.

At Nine's upfronts launch director of TV Michael Healy said the channel is just as likely to steal viewers from other networks and chief revenue officer Peter Wiltshire said the main aim is to attract and maintain viewers across Nine’s suite of four channels.

Nine Entertainment CEO David Gyngell said in a statement: “9Life is Australia’s first free-to-air lifestyle channel. It is a fresh and exciting new channel designed to inspire and entertain. We’ve worked hard to source the very best lifestyle programs in the world right now, each with big, strong characters that will resonate with fans of the genre.” Dubbed 9Now, the streaming and video-on-demand service will launch in early 2016..

Wiltshire said the flagship Nine channel, which will be telecast in HD while Gem reverts to SD, would be streamed first, followed progressively by the other three channels. 9Now will replace JumpIn as the destination for catch-up viewing and viewing for free on demand and with a second screen app.

Content will be available on numerous devices and platforms including Telstra’s newly launched Telstra TV, Fetch TV, Apple TV, X-box, Chromecast, Sony PlayStation and LG and Samsung TVs. Users will sign in, giving them a range of user benefits- and enabling NEC to provide specific targeting for advertisers. Wiltshire acknowledged the decline in free-to-air audiences this year but said that when playback and catch up viewing are added the “audience fatigue is not as significant as was once believed.”

I hope TVNZ, TV3 and SKY are all paying attention to this. I won't my AppleTV to be my hub for all things tv channels and streaming

So what should the DVB-T spectrum be used for then?

Atleast they launched with H264 here rather than using MPEG-2.

More mobile data? Perhaps there will be a new multicast based cellular standard that can be used for broadcast video purposes, newer codecs - something with h265 and 4k, whatever technology hasnt being invented yet etc.

In a few years we will be looking at those 8MHz chunks sitting there pushing out a legacy format that has largely been abandoned and want something better on it, and it will be delayed because of a loud minority of holdouts.

Analog took about 10 years too long to be killed, NZ was one of the last civilized countries to do it. Best not repeat that with DVBT switch off.

The idea of content being able to be watched because some playout system is scheduled to dump it out a broadcast stream in realtime based on a schedule is quickly dying, and the idea of filling a local storage up from that broadcast stream to watch later is just an artifact of it being sent out that way for now.

I'm trying with the app on iPad3 - says there is a problem with streaming and to try later. I have Unotelly with Dynamo set to get 7 Australia.

Edited to add: Streaming Channel 10 live no problem. I've got Family Feud on at the moment.
