robfish: I tried manually entering the correct DNS adresses but I still yet the same result.

I have made some progress. I signed up for the free trial of UnoTelly and entered their DNS addresses on the Fire TV box and NetFlix now works.

Now to convince Orcon that their Global mode is not quite right.

$84 is a great value price. I might by a couple more for the kids bedrooms as it is so much easier than connecting a notebook.

I've not ever used youshop. I use buyusa whom offer a pretty reasonable service.

I haven't rooted mine and works just fine for what I use: Hulu, Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.

Well that's exactly it, i am just going to side load XBMC and Llama, so wasn't planning on rooting it, but wasn't sure if there are any major benefits that i may be missing out on if i don't.

Anyone else finding youtube on theirs is getting worse and worse at just showing a spinner and nothing happening when seeking recently?

May be a unotelly thing too, but console on unotelly is seeking fine. I like to skip boring parts of peoples videos.

Probably nothing you are missing out on for now.

Im not too sure if I will root or not. From what I see:

Root will allow me to have XBMC/kodi in the main menu (for people other than me), rather than the Llama solution where I hijack another link.
Root access also allows you to use the usb for mass storage. without root you can't use it for anything other than keyboard/mouse I think. (I don't really care about this as my tv has a usb that can play from flashdrives etc. I am just keen for xbmc as I think the interface will be better for folders with many items.)

Seems like quite a lot of effort for not much gain, but I will re-evaluate before my fire TV turns up.

In terms of waiting to do the root, that's not really feasible unless you disable firmware auto-updates, because current firmware is un-rootable.

Wow, this has me slightly worried! I've just ordered three Fire TVs from Amazon (for two of my sisters, and one for myself to replace a Mac Mini which is really only used for XBMC).

While I access my files from a NAS, both my sisters will just be wanting to plug in an external hard drive into the unit. And as their prime if not only use is for running XBMC it's therefore critical that I'm able to enable the USB to access mass storage.

Is someone able to confirm for sure, either way, whether the firmware these newly ordered units will come with will stop me being able to root them? Or can I just ensure auto firmware updates are disabled before I root them? And, if this is the case, can I resume auto updating once the unit is rooted or do they need to remain on the original firmware?

If this isn't going to be feasible to allow USB mass storage I may still have a chance to cancel the order, given I've not received confirmation of it having shipped yet...

Thanks for the heads-up. I'd really appreciate it if you could post the firmware version on your new unit here when you do set it up.

I did a bit more reading and decided the risk was too great, so I've cancelled my order for three and put in a new order for just one unit - this way if it is possible I can root it: if successful I can order two more for my sisters, but if not there'll be no great loss (unless I brick it!) as I don't need to have USB mass storage enabled.

That said, for those wanting to order one - the price is ever-increasing due to the drop in the NZ $ - the $84 US converted to $103 as of Sunday 28th, but to $112 as of today.
