psychnurse: I put all the UK apps on via this method and they all work well. It also keeps your current US apps.

http://www.eyeondemand.com/2014/10/24/how-to-combine-us-uk-and-de-apps-on-the-amazon-fire-tv/

Yep - that works! Just what I needed.

I think I did find this in the last couple of days - but your comments about keeping the current apps reassured me.

Now have BBC iplayer and c5 installed as well as the original apps.
If 4od and ITV publish apps I will now have a 'dumb' tv with access to some super smarts!

Go for the TV player app. All the free to air UK channels live. Great pic quailty too.

TV Player?
That doesnt seem to be a Fire TV app in the various amazon sites.
This is an app you have installed on your fire tv?

Thanks psychnurse, I thought zattoo looked to be worth a try as well. Looks like you have to install via amazon.de and set the zattoo area (under unotelly) to switzerland. But it has all the main UK broadcasters as well.
This box gets better and better.

Thanks also for that info. Got Zattoo on the Fire, signed up for one month (paid) and it is really good.

Without root, does anyone know of an app whereby I can watch music videos in at least 720p?
Vevo is low quality and won't show my playlists and when I logged in wouldn't allow me to log out and back in again without starting the activation process all over again.

Zattoo is actually pretty good. I installed it and quickly had a play with it.
Like the TV player is just live streaming TV. Maybe slightly lower picture quality (I just have the free version), but it seemed to stream ok.

The free version lets you log in to a PC and set up recordings of programs (up to 20) - you can watch them later (up to 7 days) on your PC.
Doesnt seem to have that functionality on the Fire TV app. That would have been pretty cool.
Sadly most times I would be trying to watch TV will be the evenings here - so late night/morning UK - so mostly infomercials.

Does the paid version give you any extras (apart from better picture quality)?
Any ability to play back recorded content for example?

I think the pic quality is great, some buffering this morning but minimal. No playback on Firetv.

Has anyone else lost the ability to cast to YouTube on their fire tv? Just not showing on my phone yet Xbox and chrome casts still are showing.

I could not start NetFlix after a system update a few days ago.
It asked me to download the latest version but the App Store would not open on the FireTv.
Eventually found the fix (via Google)
I had to de-register then re-register my Fire Tv then NetFlix downloaded and installed fine.

Is anyone using the firetv for games? I'm thinking about getting the game controller for Christmas but the list of games doesn't seem too compelling.

My sons (three and seven) love it for games, but personally I've not bothered much myself (though I'm not a gamer); probably more useful for the younger/easier to please crowd.

I'd thought of buying them controllers for Xmas, but in the end decided I shouldn't be encouraging something I usually tell them to do less of - have bought them a tent instead!

Dpad on the controller is unusable IMO.
