Just picked up a FireTV Stick V2 in the UK last week for a play.

In the UK I tested

  • BBC iPlayer
  • ITV Hub
  • All 4 - Channel 4 UK
  • My5 - Channel 5 UK

I've also side-loaded

  • 3Now
  • Kodi
  • TVNZ On Demand

I need to re-test everything now I'm back in NZ, but TVNZ On Demand requires Google Play Services which is a problem. Anyone else managed to get it working?

I have a Gen One AFTV and have manged to load the UK apps you mention - as well as a few others. Requires a bit of switching around on your amazon account to different regions and installing the apps while you are set to that region - fortunately, switching does not wipe the apps from the other regions - so you can have a mixture.

I tried sideloading some non official apps a year or two back (ABC and SBS were what I really wanted) - but found that if they ran, they didnt work well with the remote or required play services - so I just gave up on those. One thing you cold try is installing KODI and use their addons for 3 and TVNZ - I havent used them but I have seen other people saying they are ok. I installed the KODI addons for ABC and SBS on demand and they work reliably enough - even if the interface is a bit basic.

Well the following work fine

  • BBC iPlayer
  • ITV Hub
  • All 4 - Channel 4 UK
  • Kodi

3Now should work but I need to sign in, plus the UI appears to be optimised for a phone rather than a tablet/tv. Has anyone tried it on AndroidTV or FireTV?

TVNZ I'll have another go at with different guide on configuring play services and play store.

Used Downloader to get the Firefox arm APK from APKMirror and install on my Fire TV. With a Logitech k830 keyboard (the mini adapter works just fine on ATV USB or you can use it via Bluetooth) it works great. You gotta have a touchpad keyboard because just using the arrow keys don't work really well when going over form fields.

I've put a couple of posts in another thread here, relating to installing Lightbox on the Fire stick as well as using browsers. Mouse control via my Android is quite now. I've installed Chrome and the standard Android browser mainly for use of a specific UK website for purposes which won't require me to type anything (I'll head to the laptop for that) so am not feeling a strong need to get a keyboard at the moment. Plus with the amount of money I've spent on music gear lately SWMBO would kill me if I spend anymore... I'll hang out for a few months :-)

There was discussion a month or so back about Amazon releasing a browser for the fire TV.
http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-install-and-use-amazons-silk-web-browser-on-the-fire-tv-and-fire-tv-stick/

Haven't seen any updates on this. Would be good if they did release a browser.

I updated Kodi on the fire TV last week and found the abc and sbs (aus) plugins both work very nicely now, with synopsis and thumbnail images.

What version of Kodi are your running now? 17.3?

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Yep - 17.3 (updated from an older version).

Seems that the SBS and ABC addons work very nicely with the new KODI interface.

I installed the "Downloader App"  ( http://www.aftvnews.com/how-to-sideload-apps-like-kodi-or-spmc-on-the-amazon-fire-tv-stick-using-downloader/ )

Official Amazon download page: https://www.amazon.com/AFTVnews-com-Downloader/dp/B01N0BP507

You can just start the app and enter a link for the kodi package and it downloads the install package and will ask if you want to install/update.

EDIT: Did find one annoying thing after the update - TV seemed to keep resetting the resolution/refresh rate every time I started to play something - would take quite a few seconds to complete (older plasma TV). I ended up setting the resolution rate for KODI to match the normal rate for the TV rather than letting KODI try and make the TV match whatever it thought was best each time.

As per Amazon Echo thread, you can now configure a New Zealand address and timezone for Alexa.

If you download the Amazon Echo app from the Amazon App Store, and manage your Amazon Fire TV you can now set a New Zealand address and timezone as well so Alexa answers for your local address/Post code.

Does this require an update? I couldn't get it recognise any NZ Addresses or Codes.

I entered mine as [street address], Wellington, NZ and the correct postcode and it worked for me.

On my ATV when I press the button and say "What's the time" it correctly says "The time in Ohariu is..." (Johnsonville is in Ohariu). Before that we had to say "What time is in Wellington, New Zealand?"

No update needed but I just installed the app now (had removed it months ago since it was no use).

I just asked my ATV "Tell me gas stations near here" and it answered with a few local ones (including Johnsonville and Ngaio).

I think it's all related to Amazon opening a warehouse in Australia - preparing for launch perhaps?

Close the Alexa app. Logout from Amazon Underground. Login again. Open the Alexa app and confirm your account.

This happened for me with the Amazon Prime Video app some time ago.

This is cool. Weather works and there's an NZ Herald flash briefing.
