Anyone know why Spark is only providing its app for TVs from 2017 onwards? Is it a technical reason or do you think it is a cost issue - the further you go back, the more work is involved?

I have a 2016 smart TV which is hardly out of date and runs YouTube, Dailymotion apps with no problems. It will just be a nuisance to have to connect to the laptop every time I want to watch a game.

I have to say, whilst it won't help in this situation, it's one of the reasons I generally recommend not stumping for Smart features on TV's, and using boxes like the Shield or ATV, to do the smarts for you. You can simply throw those boxes away and replace them for a couple of hundred when they are no longer useful but can keep the TV itself and still enjoy the picture you paid for.

I doubt its Spark. I've read what you typed many times here for many apps. The general consensus is use an STB. Over time, apps wlll cease to function on a TV as somebody wont support them forever

I'm only speculating but it could be a DRM support issue. I think someone earlier in the thread linked what they where using, Wildvine and something else if I recall correctly.

The core OS. Many new ones are built around android. Older ones are/were proprietary (Taizen, WebOS) or plain old HTML/flash (HbbTV). Some support new DRM features, some don't. Some have enough RAM/hardware capability needed for the app, some don't

With each variant of OS requiring different development tooling and developers....which is why they tend to drop off being "current" pretty quickly.

Is there a planned start date for that?

and surely linear feeds of ESPN and Eurosports will be added?

Just had it confirmed today that Liverpool TV will NOT be carried by Spark Sport, despite their announcements in December. Gutted.

Foxtel dropped those channels as well... Maybe Spark no longer had easy access to deliver them?

From Tuesday May 28, the three EPL club channels, Manchester United TV, Liverpool Football Club TV, and Chelsea TV will be removed from the Foxtel platform. Additionally, EPL programming from Arsenal TV, City TV, and Spurs TV will no longer appear on Fox Sports channels.

I got an email from SS a couple of days ago saying the app for Samsung TVs was now available. Now just waiting for the LG app.

Thanks for all the replies.

To me, if it is the OS or a tech reason why Spark cannot develop an app for TVs from before 2017, they should say so. I have asked them on Twitter but they have not replied. I would love a reliable app that covered popular live sports in HD. Kayo Sports seems to be doing good things in Aus.

If the app is not easy to use though or requires cables or more devices (like Chromecast) and there is a pirate option that does not, people are not going to pay. If it is harder to use the paid for service than it is to pirate a stream, then something has gone wrong.
