As far as quarantining goes, then this is a good article "Lessons from the History of Quarantine".

Note it's on the US CDC website.

When I read that - it strengthened my opinion that NZ should consider quarantining itself (by air), as failures of past attempts to quarantine (including hastening spread as infectious people escape the quarantine and spread it to unaffected populations) can't happen when we're on islands that don't (yet) have an outbreak.

I know it must make people feel better but every where I have seen or read is that the face masks people are wearing make no difference at all.

I would have thought it better to at least let that be know so people don't think the masks are a complete barrier.

Health Alert: Coronavirus Information - U.S. Consulate General Auckland, New Zealand

January 30, 2020

Event: There is an ongoing outbreak of pneumonia first identified in Wuhan, China, caused by a novel (new) coronavirus. As of January 30th, the New Zealand Minister of Health has stated that no cases of the coronavirus have yet to be confirmed in New Zealand. We recommend you follow the below precautions:

CDC has issued a Level 3 Travel Notice for travel to China. Consult the CDC website for more information.

Check with the airlines regarding any flight cancellations and/or restrictions on flying.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.

Seek medical care right away if you traveled to Wuhan and feel sick or were exposed to someone who was in Wuhan in the last six weeks who has fever, cough, or difficulty breathing.

I thought it was going to be one of these make shift tents, but it looks pretty full on with plumbing, concrete foundations, rooms, corridors etc.

Batman: this guy is very brave and i applaud him. been following him since the start of his channel.

I'm not familiar with his production. As a foreign national the worst he can expect is a night or two in the cells followed by a flight home imo.

I started watching his videos after being linked to them from casually watching a few motorbike road trip videos. He was riding around weird places in China giving something of a tour. I had no real interest in either but his presentation was what hooked me.

He's very genuine and provides an excellent insight into what living in China is like.

Stopping all international air travel or stopping all inbound passenger air travel to NZ? You really think it's time to do that?

I think it's time to start thinking about it seriously.

Guidelines from WHO will take into account the negative consequences of quarantine balanced against - and contributing to - low probability of it being effective.

As a remote island nation, we're one of the few places where it might work. Even if it's only a delay from the inevitable - then more time will mean more will be known about the disease, diagnosis, possible treatments, etc. Or maybe by that time it will have become less of a threat than it appears to be now.

It'd be somewhat of political and trade tie suicide when we rely on them so much.

Although it makes for a good story it doesn't need the fearing coverage were being shown just yet. Maybe if the mortality rate was effecting everyone and explicitly attributed.

Nation needs to keep on keeping on, Control what we can. And calm the farm confusing and crossing the line with the unknown fear caused racism etc :/

They appear to be correlating data from, among others, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, the National Health Commission of the People’s Republic of China, and Dingxiangyuan, a social networking site for health care professionals that provides real-time information on cases.

Interesting that unlike the 1918 influenza pandemic which mainly killed young, healthy people (likely through the side effects of a “cytokine storm"), this virus is causing more mortality among older, male patients.

“Children and infants’ symptoms are comparatively mild, while older people have more severe symptoms, as of our findings so far,” Feng Zijian, deputy director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters Wednesday."

So rather than being killed by their body's massive immune system over-reaction to the virus - particularly in their respiratory epithelial cells, cascading to alveolar macrophages, filling of inflamed lungs with fluid, allowing secondary bacterial infection (pneumonia), collapse of vital organs etc, this virus may be killing very differently, the increasing viral load gradually outpacing the immune response of older, weaker and immunocompromised folk.

There also appear to be cases where young, healthy people are Asymptomatic Carriers, shedding the virus without showing the raised body temperature that's being monitored for in airports, bus stations etc.

So - a virus spread by the young that kills the old?

Yep, let’s not worry until it gets to 1000 then, better to try and manage it when to late.

You overlooked the bit where I said it gives us a couple of months to prepare defences. I'm not saying do nothing, I'm saying don't panic and over-react.

a virus can get you while you sleep.

Only if you sleep with someone who is infected.

The last couple of points on the graph on the left indicate that the rate of increase in China is slowing, I guess because of their quarantine and other control measures.
