Disturbing to say the least - our primary line of defence from the world of raging coronavirus outside our shores

https://www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/man-in-nz-quarantine-blown-away-seeing-staff-only-wearing-surgical-masks

"Health workers in New Zealand quarantine hotels are some of the worst protected in the developed world"

Tim Jones says he predicted the current outbreak when he arrived at his isolation hotel two weeks ago, shocked by the low level of personal protective equipment worn by nurses, Defence Force personnel and border workers.

He was returning home from Britain after working for four years for a New Zealand-owned, US-based company RPB which provided protective equipment for frontline workers in hospitals in 50 countries, mostly the United States, Britain and Europe.

"In short, New Zealand has been the worst protected for frontline health workers that we have seen," Jones said.

"I guess probably the biggest red flags were when we landed at the border. We only saw surgical masks, including on army people who were on the bus with us so obviously in close proximity, travelling to our managed isolation facility."

He was "completely blown away" to find out from a New Zealand Defence Force contact that even staff who worked in Auckland's Jet Park, where most people have Covid-19, were wearing the most basic surgical masks.

Looking at the video of the USA election count it looks like ballot counters in USA got better PPE than our quarantine center staff.

Seems there is still a major shortage of quality PPE.

Its astounding to me, why would you not have high level of PPE for everyone at Jetpark , cleaners on up, its nothing compared with cost of a lockdown.

Surgical masks don't stop the wearer from catching coronavirus. That may have something to do with why the wearers keep catching coronavirus. Whether our health professionals can figure that out remains to be seen.

We don't need to vaccinate everyone - if we identify 'strangle points' & use limited vaccines effectively to significantly reduce incoming risk.

There is smart ways to utilise a Vaccination in the early stages of limited availability.
Probably the best way is to enforce - No vaccination = no travel between countries.
This isolates the virus and stops it causing new outbreaks. (90%) - which means we get either a 90%reduction in cases arriving - or we can allow 10x the amount of people into the country every month & only have to manage the same number of cases.

Alongside that you set a protocol, that all staff working in a Quarantine or Isolation facility must be vaccinated - or the cannot enter the building & must find a job elsewhere (this would need to be introduced in 2 stages, optionally initially before becoming a workplace requirement.)
This further reduces the chances of spread into the community.
(Note: It doesn't 'eliminate' the risk - it simply significantly reduces it, while allowing overseas countries to eliminate their infections.)

You still need to use Quarintine/isolation(or home isolation-if we can create a 'non-trust' version of that somehow - to ensure the 10% who are not protected by a Vaccination are not carrying Covid.

That's an example of effective use of limited vaccine availability.

When it becomes wider availability - you then make available to hospital staff & GP medical staff, then 'at risk sectors of society, E. G. Rest Home staff & residents & people with respiratory conditions. (if the world has not eliminated it in that time)

Your article is 4 years old. I'm guessing you're not a health professional.

Related due to these people saying they are only disposables it seems..

N95 masks

The Ministry is currently working to update its advice around access to and use of N95 masks in MIQ facilities, including clinical criteria and the supply chain. The advice will be finalised and then communicated appropriately to clinical teams and managers in MIQ in coming days.

I suspect the delayed release of the fishers gummed up the works a bit and causes them to have to dip into reserves

But there is some dodgy reporting going on,,

October total reported "effective capacity" was 7279- from total available capacity of 7827 ( 32 locations)

https://www.mbie.govt.nz/dmsdocument/12166-miq-daily-update-2020-10-20

Now we are being told that "operational capacity" is 6261 - no total capacity of provided,  still (32 locations)

https://www.mbie.govt.nz/dmsdocument/12263-miq-daily-update-2020-11-10

So somewhere something has changed.....

There was a note yesterday that 100 had been 'found' (this may include more beds per rm)

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/430197/another-100-rooms-being-added-to-managed-isolation-for-december-miq

Presumably faster stand down or clean process.

Presumably some percentage of the rooms has to be vacant at any one time, to allow cleaning and other maintenance. 6261 is remarkably close to 80% of 7827. https://www.statista.com/statistics/946482/occupancy-rates-hotels-cities-new-zealand-australia/ says that typical hotel occupancy rates for NZ were 78% pre-covid. 7279 is close to 93%. Possibly effective capacity can be a bit bigger than operational capacity, if you have a significant number of couples or families (or fishermen) who share rooms.

'Sophisticated eskies' could be key to Australia's coronavirus vaccine import plan
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-11-11/coronavirus-pfizer-vaccine-eskies/12871888

""
Sophisticated "eskies" packed with dry ice and GPS-enabled thermal sensors will be used to transport one of the most promising COVID-19 vaccine candidates in Antarctic temperatures, if it's approved by Australian regulators.
""
"They last 14 days and can be refilled twice."
""

Seems like they might be doing some IOT reporting of location and temperature.

There are quite a number of vaccines coming along some may be a bit more forgiving on temperature as approaches do vary.

Unplanned standup at 1pm today, must be bad news. Unless its about the Cooks bubble as someone went there recently to look at that
