Yesterday I pushed v1.0.0 to my Android 6 handset (from a PC browser) as it said it supported Android v6

I see today there is a new version v1.0.2 and only supports Android 7 or better so now I cannot get updates unless I can get the apk?

Note my Huawei handset cannot be upgraded to v7 despite that being available overseas. The upgrade to my handset is not available in NZ and I have tried and failed many times to upgrade to v7 here

I have sent feedback to the email address in the app saying they should endeavour to support Android 6 esp. since large scale uptake is important to the success to any contact tracing app

(FYI - I class 'media' in all its forms - print/TV/facebook/geekzone - all as 'media' & having a role/responsibility to play in pushing this out to people.)

The responsibility for pushing information out lies with the ministry of health and the government.

Mainstream media has shown no reluctance to publishing information that is provided to them - quite the opposite. It's a cheap way for them to fill content. Equally they are not cheer leaders for the government. They also have a serious role in critiquing this deployment.

If you think facebook, or most overseas social media, cares about a New Zealands contact tracing app then you are mistaken. They will publish what they are paid to publish. The government has shown no hesitation in paying for advertising on social media previously during this crisis. 

The Ministry of health doesn't get all the credit and none of the criticism (nor should it be the other way around).

It only works on ios 12 and newer s doesn't support iphone 5C and older, which many elderly for example still use as many older people don't regularly update their devices.  Doesn't Apple allow new apps to be installed on versions older? Most  apps seem to support ios 10 including banking apps

I saw someone post a tweet of a sign on an establishments door, that required anyone entering to scan the QR code, and if they didn't there was no entry.

I went out for a sail today - yacht club had printed posters laminated with QR code but the app wouldn't recognise the code - came up with a "code not supported" message, a couple of other people with me from the club tell me "nah - don't worry about it - it doesn't work".  I guess it's probably because someone in the office stuffed up - but when an opt-in system fails like that, people will give up on the idea as a waste of time. 

 

Did it have a big ol striped border? If not, Go back tomorrow, scan it with a standard barcode AP. It's probably what BK have done.

Print QR with weblink to online questionnaire capture form. They get people to zap and give away details before entering. A lot have done this. If it doesn't have an associated logo to identify, it likely won't be associated with an automated logger with specific requirements (like the MBIE one)

Since USA has ordered American firms including Google to not provide updates to Huawei it might be a long while before you can get any updates.

My parents wanted me to install it on their phones tonight, and they are using Marsh mellow and Lollipop which can' t be upgraded, so it doesn't look like they can install it. I wonder if there are stats on how many active devices are too old to support the OS versions it supports. I am a bit surprised it only supports down to Android 7 , or iOS 12,. as I am not sure what features older OS versions don't support. At least with apple, it could still support the 5S and 6 which are 5 + years old. But not the 5C, which is the same age as the 5S

That is not the issue for me Android v7 is available for my handset just not in NZ, to install the non NZ ROM I'll have to unlock the bootloader which is preventing the non NZ rom

This is not correct. Existing handsets retain the licence they have. Also, the restrictions are in supplying Google's own frameworks (app, Google Play Store) and have nothing to do with the Android project itself, which is open source. However, OEMs may have their own policies regarding updates - most devices on Android One, for example, have two years of upgrades.

This pretty much means that any device that originally shipped with Android 6 or Android 7 might not even have updated OS anymore. 

I would be more worried about recent devices that run Android 8, Android 9 and Android 10 not receiving updates because either someone bought a parallel imported device from a cheap brand that doesn't invest in updates, or from a brand that's bad at delivering updates or even because telcos are in the middle between OEM and the user, having to "approve" updates.

Apple, on the other hand, has already begun delivering an update with the required API in place. Android users, in general, will have no such luck - if an update comes it will probably not be a timely one.

Yep, installed fine for me. Though had an error or rather non starter in terms of it not doing anything when I pointed the app at a QR code.  That was v1, have not tried since the update.
