Geektastic: Surely they wouldn’t risk tens of millions of dollars on something that they might be legally unable to use?!

Pretty sure all the contracts are dependant on the vaccine being found safe and effective in its trials and then receiving the appropriate regulatory approvals ... there will have been an up front cost but most of the payment will be made after it starts to ship once approved

Scott3:

Should also vaccines becoming available later might be better than the ones that have already completed stage 3 trials. The single-dose Janssen one should complete stage 3 trials before the end of the month. 90% + efficacy is expected based on data to date. Being a single does vaccine and not requiring ultra-cold storage would significantly ease the cost and logistical challenges of the roll out, and would avoid issues stemming from an inevitable chunk of the population that have the first dose, but not the second of a 2 dose course.

The Novavax vaccine is also going to be very interesting to see. I know somebody who is part of the phase 3 trial of this who is very excited to have had it (had minor symptoms so is pretty confident he had the actual vaccine and not the placebo).

There has been a lot of hype and speculation around this, particularly after the Bloomberg interview a few weeks ago. It's potentially going to match mRNA efficacy and Novavax also seem pretty confident their vaccine will stop virus shedding with their tests on primates showing pretty positive results.

If I was a drug company in the current situation I'd be wanting some form of unconditional payment. Otherwise go to the back of the queue and you get it when it suits us.

In the scheme of things a few million dollars is a very very good investment for the government to secure supply.

Mandatory masks on transport and quarantine on arrival - "Biden signs burst of virus orders, requires masks for travel"

Biden’s top medical adviser on COVID-19, Dr. Anthony Fauci, also announced renewed U.S. support for the World Health Organization after the Trump administration had pulled out of the global body. Fauci said early Thursday that the U.S. will join the U.N. health agency’s efforts to bring vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics to people in need, whether in rich or poor countries and will resume full funding and staffing support for WHO.

The U.S. mask order for travel being implemented by Biden will apply to airports and planes, ships, intercity buses, trains and public transportation. Travelers from abroad must furnish a negative COVID-19 test before departing for the U.S. and quarantine upon arrival. Biden has already mandated masks on federal property.

Meanwhile in the USA "Executive Order on Protecting the Federal Workforce and Requiring Mask-Wearing"

It is the policy of my Administration to halt the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by relying on the best available data and science-based public health measures.  Such measures include wearing masks when around others, physical distancing, and other related precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Put simply, masks and other public health measures reduce the spread of the disease, particularly when communities make widespread use of such measures, and thus save lives.

Accordingly, to protect the Federal workforce and individuals interacting with the Federal workforce, and to ensure the continuity of Government services and activities, on-duty or on-site Federal employees, on-site Federal contractors, and other individuals in Federal buildings and on Federal lands should all wear masks, maintain physical distance, and adhere to other public health measures, as provided in CDC guidelines.

...

(d)  Heads of agencies may make categorical or case-by-case exceptions in implementing subsection (a) of this section to the extent that doing so is necessary or required by law, and consistent with applicable law.  If heads of agencies make such exceptions, they shall require appropriate alternative safeguards, such as additional physical distancing measures, additional testing, or reconfiguration of workspace, consistent with applicable law.  Heads of agencies shall document all exceptions in writing.

Biden is on a roll: "Executive Order on Organizing and Mobilizing the United States Government to Provide a Unified and Effective Response to Combat COVID-19 and to Provide United States Leadership on Global Health and Security"

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered as follows:

Section 1.  Purpose.  The Federal Government must act swiftly and aggressively to combat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).  To that end, this order creates the position of Coordinator of the COVID-19 Response and Counselor to the President and takes other steps to organize the White House and activities of the Federal Government to combat COVID-19 and prepare for future biological and pandemic threats.

Sec. 2.  Organizing the White House to Combat COVID-19.  (a)  In order to effectively, fully, and immediately respond to COVID-19, there is established within the Executive Office of the President the position of Coordinator of the COVID-19 Response and Counselor to the President (COVID-19 Response Coordinator) and the position of Deputy Coordinator of the COVID-19 Response.  The COVID-19 Response Coordinator shall report directly to the President; advise and assist the President and executive departments and agencies (agencies) in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic; coordinate all elements of the COVID-19 response; and perform such duties as the President may otherwise direct.

Press release:

Border workers in quarantine facilities will be offered voluntary daily COVID-19 saliva tests in addition to their regular weekly testing, COVID-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins said today.

This additional option will be rolled out at the Jet Park Quarantine facility in Auckland starting on Monday 25 January, and then to other dual-use Managed Isolation and Quarantine facilities in Wellington and Christchurch.

“This new precautionary measure is in response to higher rates of infection overseas and the more transmissible variants of COVID-19, and is the latest in a series of added protection measures at the border,” Chris Hipkins said.

“Saliva tests will be offered on a voluntary basis to staff at quarantine facilities..

“Saliva tests have a lower sensitivity than the nasopharyngeal test, so won’t replace our ongoing ‘gold standard’ diagnostic testing methods already in place at the border and in our community. They will be offered as an additional screening tool for our highest risk border workers. The tests are less invasive.

“They could mean we pick up any positive cases among workers at quarantine facilities faster and will provide workers with another layer of assurance.

“They are among the most tested people in the country and perform a critical role in keeping COVID-19 out of New Zealand communities. Their ongoing safety is a top priority.

“The role and effectiveness of saliva testing continues to evolve. The Ministry of Health will report back to me with findings in early March 2021,” Chris Hipkins said.

We keep hearing of new Covid cases in MIQ in the daily updates, but we don't hear how many if any end up in hospital or intensive care. Is anyone going to hospital but we're just not hearing about it?

the people returning are not in the age group that tends to end up in hospital.

The Washington Post - Coronavirus Newsletter

today

William Shakespeare knew it: Something is rotten in Denmark. The more contagious coronavirus variant has spread swiftly in the country, according to Danish scientists.

They have done a remarkably thorough job of finding the strain by sequencing viral genomes from patient samples.

The strain, a.k.a. B117 or the “U.K. variant,” is more transmissible: The proportion of new cases caused by the variant are rising 70 percent per week in Denmark.

Projections indicate that it will become the dominant strain there as early as the middle of February.

And it's on the rise elsewhere, too.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently estimated that the variant will dominate U.S. cases by March.
