New Zealand could adopt the Qatari system. You have to give the app almost unlimited access to your device (GPS, Bluetooth, files, photos, phonecalls etc). If you are outside your house without a functional app it's up to an $80,000 fine and/or up to 3 years in prison.

The app only works on iOS 13 or android 5 and up.

I'm sure the data will only be used for contact tracing....

@xlinknz - this morning the app scanned the QR code fine. So, working fine on a rooted phone (not sure if it's the update or magiskhide).

Yeah, nah. That wouldn't fly with the Privacy Commissioner here.

Yes, we all know how trustworthy the Qatari government is.

My grandmother set the MoH app up all on her own the other day (proud!) and was excited to use it and do her bit. She hasn't found a single place with the MoH QR code in Rotorua (or anything else for that matter). She wonders what the point is. In fairness, she will not be out and about very much and had only gone to the supermarket, pharmacy and one other store.

On a more general note, I wonder why we aren't using the Apple-Google API / framework thing. Does anyone know why or if there are plans to use it?

Do you truly think there will be widespread support on existing Android devices for this framework?

Well, it was only released yesterday, and to developers I think about a week ago, more or less.

And yet the Apple iOS update with the support for this API is already being installed since yesterday. See my previous post - people with cheap imported no-brand phones, OEMs that have a policy of not releasing updates for phones older than one or two years old, telcos having to approve updates (if it requires more than the Google framework), people running non-Google Android devices - I don't think it's realistic to expect Android users to have this available.

Does anyone here have a APK they can share so we can try sideload/force loading on older devices?
(Not recommended for general public to do of course - but we are geeks here & this is what we do to help family & experiment)

No I don't - for precisely the reasons you describe downthread ie poor update support on a lot of Android phones.

But in fairness, the MoH app doesn't seem work on older phones either (I think down to Andoroid 7 was it?).

quote: freitasm: Apple, on the other hand, has already begun delivering an update with the required API in place. Android users, in general, will have no such luck - if an update comes it will probably not be a timely one.

Be interesting to see if this pushes people into dumping their "security black hole" Android devices and buying Apple iPhones like the new SE model.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Fred99:

I went out for a sail today - yacht club had printed posters laminated with QR code but the app wouldn't recognise the code - came up with a "code not supported" message, a couple of other people with me from the club tell me "nah - don't worry about it - it doesn't work".  I guess it's probably because someone in the office stuffed up - but when an opt-in system fails like that, people will give up on the idea as a waste of time.

They are probably using a different app?

It doesn't work on older Android phones. But it works on newer Android phones now *without* the framework/API. So it's an advantage already.

If the app supports the API in future versions, it will cover even more ground.

So there's no good excuse to not use it now anyway.

So we'd have one more system that nothing uses?

The problem isn't the framework, it's that virtually nothing has the QR codes. What we'd need is a requirement for businesses to display them as a condition of trading at level 2, with spot checks and enforcement.

I think the whole point of the Apple/Google API is that the end user doesn't have to do a thing – your iPhone or Android speaks privately (and automatically) to every other iPhone or Android it sees in the wild.

Strangely though it requires an App to be installed to actually activate the API (and that App must be integrated with the API), which I'm hoping the new official MOH App will do soon enough, as I have also not seen one single QR code poster in the new MOH App format.

yes I'd like the apk too to try and get working properly and update on Android 6 (I have 1.0.0 of the app and now cannot update)

Initially it was released for Android 6 then changed to 7 the next day...goodness knows how any many Android 6 users (like me) now have an app that either doesn't work properly or cannot be updated

Many security products from Google, MS, RSA work and are supported on Android 6 so I fail to understand why at least Android 6 cannot be supported

I cannot help but feel the app was rushed and didn't have good testing or requirements

This RNZ article from one of the original developers is quite insightful to why we have what we have (so far)
