Given the goverment has ordered 10m doses for our 4.9m population, it seems the government is expecting approvals for kids to be granted too.

...

5.1m as at 30 Dec 2020 according to https://www.stats.govt.nz/ (number of people who usually live in New Zealand)

==

But yes, clearly includes anticipated doses for kids.

There should also be plenty for Realm countries as well given that we are very unlikely to exceed 95% penetration (and probably somewhat lower); ie. allowing for those who can't and those who won't.

It wouldn't surprise me if we don't go beyond ~85% of the population getting a vaccine. Maybe it might be higher, but you have to put it into some context and compare it to other vaccinations.

...

Remember they also factored in a 5% wastage factor.

Seem to recall they also brought in special needles that enable an extra dose from each vial.  Not clear if that is factored in or means we can in theory vaccinate more than 5m.

Possibly enough to supplement Samoa and Tonga as well?  Interestingly though, already ~10% of the population of Tonga has received a first dose, which more than double the NZ figure.

It's worth noting there were no actual "buses full of people" turning up. That comment seemed to cause a lot of confusion when discussed by media - and seemed to be one person describing (in their view) lots of people turning up in Northland.

At the end of the day however I'd argue in many ways it doesn't matter who gets their vaccine.. It's all about establishing herd immunity at the end of the day.

Now to see if a few people try and do similar to above despite it being targeted audience.

Headline stories in the New York Times this morning reports concern about sharp declines in people receiving their first shot (somewhat expected because so many have already been vaccinated) but mentions that the target is to have 70% vaccinated by July 4.

~85% is roughly what we achieve for 5 year vaccination completion for kids, dragged down in some regions and especially for Maori populations (Northland etc).

I have doubts that we'll get to 85%. for C-19 (of eligible population - ie not including kids).  There are too many nutters being active, on social media, handing out pamphlets, some quasi-Christian and other CT groups etc.

I think the original plan was to use AZ for the pacific, (although this was drawn up before we went all in on Pfizer). now it appears that the Realm ( CI, Nuie, Tokelau) will get Pfizer... I still have a feeling that Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu will still get AZ, (population is around ~320K)

I think Australia is going to help out in Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu, so I agree it will be more than likely AZ

I've been trying to contact the 0800 vaccination hotline this morning (open 9am until 4pm)... no answer for the first ten minutes and then constantly engaged.

Anybody managed to get through?

Still trying (for the past 45 minutes!) to speak to someone to book an appointment - the instructions for the hotline are to choose option 1 after getting through.

Did you get a notification to call to book them?

I can imagine right now the hotline will be chokka with people over 65 calling to book their vaccination. The majority won't understand that it's still going to be 2+ months before many are vaccinated so most aren't even going to be able to make a booking yet.

The problem we face is that the Govt and MoH said that stage 3 would begin in May. That's 1.7m people additional people who are eligible for a vaccine which requires 3.4m doses.

As of ~10 days ago the MoH expect to have given 1m doses by the end of June. As there are 480,000 people in stage 1 and stage 2 this means that the vast majority of people in this stage 3 group have very little chance of getting their vaccine before July when the entire population becomes eligible.

The whole booking process really is a nightmare, and the reality is it's going to still be 4-5 months (Sep - Oct) before the bulk of people are going to be vaccinated.

I live in Northland DHB region which is under performing against their plan by 70%

see https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/diseases-and-conditions/covid-19-novel-coronavirus/covid-19-data-and-statistics/covid-19-vaccine-data#model

I've been informed that Northland vaccination centres have spare capacity and are allowing eligible residents (I'm an eligible resident) to simply turn up to get jabbed. I don't know how true this is. However, you still need to book an appointment using the Northland Hotline number. before attending.

There are five vaccination centre throughout Northland with my nearest centre is Whangarei which is only open a total of 24 hours over four separate days each week.

Maybe, Northland should try to beef up their Hotline number or scrap it to improve their stats..

And this is my reason for my original post... When I do manage to get past the initial engaged tone, the automated switchboard can't handle the traffic and I get a 2nd engaged tone. I've phoned over forty times today without getting anywhere.
