Someone in Government knew there was Community Transmission in Sydney, and that the border was likely going to have to shut.

They decided the risk of allowing travelers until the very last second was worth it, and hundreds of thousands of people, and thousands of businesses are now paying the price for their sheer arrogance and stupidity.

Someone needs to own that and say we stuffed up. It wasn't an accident the traveler brought COVID, it was deliberate negligence by some one(people) placing a few tourists dollars over the lives and livelihood of kiwis.

This is why I despise our government at the moment. They knew the risk and placed the dollar value of a few tourists over the health and wellbeing of our own citizens.

This is not ok.

This is system working as it was set up ... the govt always said that if the bubble was to close anytime a case evaded MIQ and was in the community, then it would likely be closed more than it was open.

"Continue quarantine-free travel
For example, case linked to the border — there is low risk of further transmission."

https://covid19.govt.nz/travel/quarantine-free-travel/australia/how-a-covid-19-case-in-australia-would-be-managed-quarantine-free-travel/#continue-quarantine-free-travel

The traveller coming to NZ left on Friday 18th June... at that point there were 3 cases in Sydney

Wait.... what?

I doubt anybody "in Government" here knew anything significantly more than you'd be able to find out yourself by reading the news or even posts in this thread.

When the couple from Sydney arrived in Wellington the known cases in Sydney were the driver, his wife, one woman who'd visited a cafe "hot-spot" and one false positive.  The chance of one infected person being on a flight to NZ was low, that kind of occurrence was always expected along with escape from quarantine.

The only sure way to prevent C-19 getting in is to close borders 100%.   That includes air freight, sea freight, it was never going to happen, the risk of exactly what's happened over the past fortnight was always known.

Timeline on the Sydney outbreak here:

(ABC News are doing a stellar job reporting - unlike most of the rest of the Australian media coverage which is awful)

This mornings news

8:42am - Some Sydney residents flocked to beaches on Sunday despite being in lockdown, prompting a warning from the police.

At Bondi, where the current COVID-19 cluster originated, people were sunbathing and socialising at the beach on Sunday, 7 News reported.

Queensland has two new CT cases.

One is someone who returned from the mine in the NT, and that outbreak is now confirmed to be the Delta strain.  170 (of the 900 FIFO workers at the mine) are based in Brisbane, they're obviously trying to track them all down.  I'd hazard a guess that many of the 900 who aren't in Brisbane could be scattered anywhere.  So long as you could endure shifts at the mine, then you could have a pretty nice lifestyle, big money without having to live in a big city, making home somewhere nice on the Qld or NSW coast.

I hope we're sure that none of these 900 came to NZ.

So far there are 5 confirmed cases linked to the mine, so there's no doubt whatsoever that the index case was infectious.

Here's Google Earth view of the worker accommodation.  On the negative side, the larger buildings will be shared facilities and workers share quarters.  On the positive side, at least they know who the 900 contacts are, and on most of those mine sites there's a total 24/7 alcohol ban.

I don't mean to be rude but this seems a weird take, or maybe I've just misunderstood your point?

The bubble is open right up until it's shut, and reasons why it could be shut are clearly signposted. There's always a chance it could shut. When the infected person got on the plane, the situation in Sydney looked ok - and remember NSW likes to parrot their 'gold standard' contact tracing (which in fairness to them is pretty good).

Is your point the government should move to close the bubble earlier (perhaps at the first CT case for example)? If so then I'm possibly inclined to agree.

from ABC News:

Changes to hotel quarantine on National Cabinet agenda

State and territory leaders are set to hold an emergency National Cabinet meeting today in response to the COVID developments over the weekend. We're still not sure when exactly that meeting will be though.

On the agenda are a few things including a briefing from the Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly and the man heading up the vaccine rollout Lieutenant General John Frewen.

The group will also discuss changes to hotel quarantine including not having low risk domestic travellers quarantined next door, or on the same level, as high risk international ones.

They'll also talk about introducing post-quarantining testing on day 16 and testing and vaccinating people in quarantine.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has also flagged she wants to look at temporarily lowering the international passenger caps again.

On vaccines, there'll also be an update of how many aged care workers are vaccinated, and how to speed that up.

According to the latest figures around 33.6 of aged care workers have reported to the government that they've received a vaccine.

Indeed, but they have had some good outcomes previously so credit to them. Unfortunately clearly it wasn't enough for this outbreak, and the delay (dilly-dallying on lockdown) while they waited to find out it wasn't up to snuff for this outbreak has cost them and potentially us.

I think I read somewhere Gladys deliberately delayed because she wanted to try preserve that reputation as not needing to resort to lockdowns.

Hasn't made NZ news yet but Victoria published two new locations last night - the coffee roasters is right next to Air NZ check-in. This is going to affect potentially a lot of people on NZ122 from MEL-AKL yesterday who would have been at the airport during this time.

I can't believe this hasn't made significant (any) headlines in NZ media. I emailed it as a news tip to Stuff & 1 news yesterday, but no articles yet.

I thought a potentially entire plane load of close contacts coming into NZ would absolutely be headline worthy...

I now know of one person impact that first heard of the exposure site via a repost of the above on another platform. Was the first they had herd of it, so not like health contract tracers have been calling the entire passenger manifest...

They were announced on the stand up yesterday that the toilet and cafe were added but not specifically that other flights may have been in the area
perhaps that was for Wellington side however.

Guess working on if you know you know
