Hypothetically if your work was paying for you to travel in the week after next to Melbourne would any of you still go or would it be way too high risk you'd be stuck there or Q on arrival?

Thoughts please?

This scenario could apply to me.

If work is paying then I guess you're going because your employer needs you too. If that's the case then I'd expect the employer to be prepared for your return being disrupted and also be prepared to cover the costs as well as paying your wages.

It's all very well for your employer to cover the financial cost of any disruption, but what about the disruption to your personal commitments?

Personally if my employer asked me to travel to Australia then I would simply refuse.

That's not an option in my case.

You: I might not be able to return when I need to so regrettably I will have to put off the trip.

Snowflake: Whee! I can fly to Melbourne!

Fred99:

Unvaccinated hospital worker (receptionist) who worked near (note - not in - just near) a Covid ward went on holiday to Magnetic Island when probably infectious.

Queensland case:

But wait - there's more.

The 19 year old woman was infectious from 19th June, symptomatic on the 21st, circulated in the community, went on holiday to Townsville / Magnetic Island, and didn't get tested until yesterday.  Confirmed Delta stain. Brilliant.  Potentially far worse than the limo driver in Sydney.

In defence of rapid testing it's not 100

Most of them aren't even 50%.

People like this are the worst. Be kind and all - but are they being kind to all others?

She was probably quite normal and not a bad person at all, just young.

The whole quarantine / infection control system has to be based on allowing for the actions of the lowest common denominator.  And it's people of our generations leading that response.

Just shows why ya can't trust everyone to do the right thing. It is exactly why MIQ was introduced in NZ, to almost eliminate the risk of it getting into the community again. Yet NZ is entertaining reopening the bubble again, and risking another multibillion dollar lockdown with this highly infectious strain, and in winter...insane.  WIll we never learn. A pity it seems to have got too political. IMO we get the reward once we have vaccinated the population

Yip. Everyone does things in their life that in hindsight are stupid. The longer the pandemic goes on the more likely this is to happen.

Sooner or later there will be significant outbreaks in New Zealand. They'll be from something silly or stupid. Hopefully the vaccination program will be far enough along to limit the impact.

I wonder how many know what herd immunity means. I'm not even sure I know

Lets say the vaccines are 90% effective and that we vaccinate 80% of the entire population.

To me, 10% of that 80% will get sick, as will the remaining 20%. The virus can still spread by the vaccinated 80% but its a lower viral load, so it will struggle to spread but it will spread.

Eventually everyone will have been exposed, and the unvaccinated will probably then be naturally vaccinated, and the virus will peter out

All depending on how long vaccines and natural immunity lasts, then we have booster shots

But it will cost lives, as does the flu. But does the flu leave potential permanent damage?

As a layman, that's what I think herd immunity is, happy to be enlightened on this

I have. That's one "experts" view. Ive seen others that say 80% means herd immunity. Is his view universally accepted?
