I think I find Helen Clarke more attractive now.

600-1000 people were killed by Alcohol related deaths in New Zealand last year. Thats more harm and cost to society than any "Immagined" costs from pot to society will be in a Millennia, let alone its the average per year.

Do we really need to play dumb and drag it out? Yes there is one very serious issue, the rest is, do we let the government tax us like mad, because in the states, by the gram, an ounce is still only $300. Or do we have both, professional products sold in cafes that also have non smoke rooms, that supply vape baloons etc, and be allowed 1-2 plants at home and 30gm of dried flower. I think thats the ideal situation.

wiz khalifa ok sounds funny when he laughs, but look at his businesses and say hes stupid, no question hes on point.

he smokes all day and only his own strain, because it works for him, and this is the thing bennet doesnt get clearly (although maybe has 25 cups of coffee for lunch), not every strain will agree with every person.

also Wiz is quite high up in Muah Thai now and smokes before sparring/working out as it gives him mental focus. He has the meanest snap kick of his hips.

Considering he was VERY thin prior, hes gained 20kg in muscle since starting MMA training.

Its spelt out here Nixon took a helpful relatively harmless for adults, flowering plant and threw it in with Coke etc. 40+ years there are still some who are no familiar with the plant that believe the propaganda and stigma that cannabis is bad. prior to then Cannabis was legal and had not caused issue for a long period of time.

This is old and already 87% support medicinal use, another poll shows well over 2/3 want cannabis completely legalised for recreational use. There is even a video of NZ police stating they want it legalised. One big part that is coming out though is there is no desire for pot to be commercilised and sold in stores.

This will leave is with a system similar to Canadas if the government does list, minus the commercialism. Which really leaves it how it was prior to the US announcing its War on drugs and throwing the baby out with the bath water. Meaning legalised and freely grown. But I still think there should be a major education programe to the youth, to the older people who do not dabble in cannabis and believed the propaganda and for education specifically for what strains will help each individual as i really can be chalk and cheese to what you either need medicinally or what you will enjoy recreationally.

There has to be a means of aquiring these strain seeds and its as simple as not making seeds in the mail prohibited as we can access seeds from the US or Amsterdam, the annecdotal reviews just like beer or wine are all over the net but 2 main reviews sites.

And its as simple as that with a follow up review of the situation in 5 years time.

I think this video spells most of that out. Perhaps not the application strains for personality types or for medicinal needs.

That youtube link to Lifted Cannabis' facility in Tacoma showcases the dilemma an ethical investor might have with the industry.

They're a producer for 'Northwest Cannabis Solutions' of Olympia WA, which distributes product through most of WA's 500 or so outlets – in turn the facilities NWCS operate and distribute through are owned by “BrightLeaf Developments LLC” a holding company of Cannex which owns (and licenses them) the right to sell many of Washington’s best-selling Cannabis brands.

Cannex's US market strategy has been to buy up producers (their production facilities & brands) in US States - Washington, California, Arizona and Nevada— which have already negotiated licensing & production hurdles of their local State cannabis markets.

Why does this matter?
One thing that immediately struck me was Lifted's energy-intensive production techniques.
Grow rooms full of 1000 watt Sodium bulbs - paired with “Industrial sized” air conditioning units to get rid of the heat they radiate, racks of commercial sized dehumidifiers running flat out, direct drive fans continually circulating the air, CO2 generators...

It's a facility typical of the small operators that have sprung up to service State sized markets in the US.
That type of operation probably isn't sustainable in the long run.. their production cost is likely close to $US1.50/gram ($520/lb) where the big (more efficient) operators are producing at well less than $1/gram (below $400/lb).

These smaller & relatively inefficient growers are the reason that in WA alone, 100 megawatts (over 1% of WA's total) of electricity production's been diverted into Grow Facilities.

By 2016 - when still only legal in a few States - Cannabis Growing was already using over 1% of all US electricity production (and is rising towards 2% now) and up to 3% of California's production. Energy demand at Colorado's largest utility grew about 2 percent after marijuana was legalized.

To grow each Cannabis plant uses 70 gallons of oil energy equivalent – and water use is huge - each plant requires 22 litres of water a day.. larger companies producing say, 500,000 kg a year need to be sourcing their energy carefully to support sustainable, low carbon production.

With recreational Cannabis use in 10 States, Medical in 33 now legal - and a bunch more coming in 2019, the Carbon Footprint of Cannabis production - in the US and worldwide - is something that has to be considered.

Growing indoors means you can grow for 365 days a year. Growing outdoors you're restricted to summer only. Those numbers were mind boggling for sure, I'd never looked at it that way.

Getting high or Getting drunk ?? - Expensive high or a cheap drunk ?? - Stoner or alcoholic ??

Growing cannabis and hemp outside would certainly cut the Carbon Footprint down - energy and water demand, nutrients runoff, etc - it would also, to a some immeasurable degree, even have a positive CO2 reduction benefits via photosynthesis. But as the above article says you are better able to control the quality of the product with indoor growing.

They are legally growing it outdoors in the Hawkes Bay I believe.

So outdoor organic or indoor factory production ??

But natures sunshine is best. I grow, outdoors, my own tomato's, blueberries, grapes, rhubarb, red and black currants and make relishes, soups, pies etc. So when it becomes legal to grow your own wacky tobacky I will also cultivate a couple of plants outside in my raised sheep manured garden beds. Of course the trouble, or mind boggling decision will be; what strain of plant for Tauranga, what type of flavour, what level of harshness or mellowness, what level of THC or (god forbid) what level of CBD ??

Let the games begin!

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Yes I agree. I cant imagine hand spraying water on 500 metric tonne of plant a year.

So simply home grown is less of a footprint? If so the seeds have to be very specific and have access to the variety of seeds the US does.

..Dicotyledoneae / Urticales / Cannabaceae/ includes Hops (mmm..beer:) and the three subspecies of Cannabis, are all fairly tough plants – C Ruderalis is certainly a real weed.

Cannabis is 'dioecious' so usually grows into separate male and female plants (stress induced hermaphrodism happpens but is discouraged in cultured plants). Females produce all the goods - males are just kept around if there's a need to pollinate them.

In their 'wild' form they're easily tough enough be grown outside.

Extensive cropping suits the varieties grown as Industrial Hemp perfectly.
Virtually the whole plant's usable in different products, notably the seed, for food and oil, and/or the primary stem of the plant – for it's fibre and hurd.

Tall, robust and hardy, it's a nice proportionate plant and can be grown without pesticides, with low water and fertilizer usage (though of course for maximum yield a suitable cultivar and the correct inputs are required) Visiting a decent late-season crop's a pleasure, there's something exuberant about the smell, the colour of a whole field of it.. like visiting a flowering sunflower crop..

When we moved back to NZ a decade ago we were disappointed to find our favourite breakfast, hempseed, unobtainable.
It's use a food in NZ has only just been legalised

With unreasonable regulatory controls limiting Hemp production, there are no processing plants for fibre or hurd yet - a shame as some cultivars can produce up to 10 t/ha. of biomass with fibre about 25 to 30 per cent of the stalk, and – importantly - the carbon Sequestration potential of hemp depends on locking up this 'biomass' rather than releasing it back to the atmosphere.

But outside's one crop a year. Exposed to all the diseases, vagaries of the weather, pests (possums love Cannabis) and theft.
If that's commercially viable way to grow depends on your target products and their market.

For Recreational and Medical use, Cannabinoids are the goal. Again only females are cultured, specifically for a tiny part – the Trichome - of their sex organs (the 'bud' or, when grouped, 'cola' structures).

The resin glands that sprout these trichomes, clear crystalline sticky growths, loaded with the grower's goal – Cannabinoids (and aromatic terpenes) - are found on the inner bud's special leaves (Bracts) that encase the Calyx and the Pistil with it's Stigma (hair-like structures that protrude with the reproductive intent of catching pollen from the male plant).

In outdoor - extensive – cultivation, our female plant, after growing vegetatively through most of the season (photosynthetically building up the energy to produce buds) senses the growing season coming to an end (in reaction to changing light), and decides it's time to go forth and multiply.

When deprived of a male (and the chemical cascade associated with seed production) the poor female gets a bit desperate, madly producing buds with increased trichome density (in a final bid to capture any pollen at all) and as a side effect - lots of the desired cannabinoids. After this last gasp effort she quickly ages and soon the valuable trichomes just drop off.

Indoor growing takes advantage of this cycle and the sexual frustration of millions of virgin cannabis plants.. producing up to 4-6 rotating harvests of 500g/m² of grow area.
The plants themselves, instead of being grown from (genetically variable) seed are 'cloned' or 'tissue cultured' from hybridised female 'mothers'.. freakish plants, bred to produce massive, outsized sex organs, that rapidly reach peak growth in the overcooked, tightly controlled climate of a grow room.

A cultivar with the right genotype – exposed to a specific combination of light duration, intensity and spectrum, heat and nutrients - results in a phenotype where the plant's vegetative growth and sexual maturation's condensed into an almighty continuous surge. A full season of growth condensed into weeks.

These inbred abominations are barely able to physically support themselves, let alone thrive in cold, wind or rain outside.
An equivalent would be taking your pet jellyfish from the aquarium and setting it free on the lawn.

There'll be niche for high-quality, outdoor grown Cannabis - boutique products - where the extra effort and cost of production pays off with a higher retail price. There'll be other niches – greenhouse organically grown as Helius is doing in Kumeu, combinations and tweaks of controlled indoor environments- Totally artificial light, Natural/artificial light, fully natural light, some who grow with renewably supplied energy...
There'll be suppliers of 'hardy' homegrow seed varieties for those who'd like to grow their own if that's legalised.

It's going to come down to cost and ease of production - consumer choice (and the influence of marketing). In places where it's legalised consumers have so far tended to prefer cheaper mass produced bud (with it's catchily named strains, quality tested & labled with Cannabinoid content, reproducable effects, professionally presented and marketed)

TL/DR: Consumers are probably going to choose the easiest cheapest and most available product that's presented to them..

You know it doesn't work for pain?

Friend has done it......she has severe spinal issues and is on morphine.

Replace the morphine - no way. As well as? She said it let her do a bit more, helped the spasms and weird stuff she gets in her hands (unable to open or close them) to a point.

She said it sort of make you not think about it too. But kill pain? No.

There is a bit of a snake oil mentality around about the stuff, people think it's a cure-all. It isn't.

Great post and thanks for all the info, but I don't want produce it commercially or grow gourmet weed. I haven't touched it for years and I don't miss it but if it was legal I might have a couple of wild plants in the garden just for the hell of it. But that's all.
